I picked up the most expensive card in my collection (very mint 7k points Mew) for $420 at the very very start of June. Even though it’s small beans to the majority of the people here it’s a fairly big deal to me. Today there’s 4 copies on ebay ranging from 1300 to 2700. I alllllllmost waited too long. Now that everything has exploded I’ve had to adjust further and aim for even smaller beans
I’ve been adjusting my collection goals too. I am going for lower grades of cards, opting for unlimited and Japanese versions, and collecting what I like for more modern. It has been difficult to change my mindset, but I am slowly coming around to it and it is easing my angst. Glad to see I am not the only one doing this.
I’ve been quite spoilt because I used to be able to buy cards every month. I think it’s just about managing expectations. I can get the same cards, I just have to save for them.
Definately can relate to this post! I have binder collections started for both unlimited and 1st edition wotc, quite a few part complete sets. I’m trying to decide whether to continue to pursue the 1st edition sets I may have to give up on them and just focus on completing the unlimited. I also had to sell or trade off some parts of my collection which I hadn’t originally planned to in order to raise funds to complete other goals. I am lucky to have the collection I have and I pulled the trigger just in time on a couple of items before they became out of reach, but so many unfinished goals still!
Adapt and overcome! Otherwise it is like a ship fighting against a storm rather than going with the wind. Pretty sure a wise man once said something like that
Hindsight is 2020. I sold a 1st ed charizard for $500. We never know what the future holds. We can only take decisions with the resources we have. Shouldn’t live regretting. Focus on the present and the future
I sold off my rather large slab collection in January (RIP) and have completely shifted to working on binder master sets. I get a lot more enjoyment hunting cards and getting a ton for the same monthly budget I had for set aside for buying slabs. Collecting PSA 10 tyranitar has always been my number one goal, but I’m at the point I’m lucky to buy 2-3 a year so doesn’t really detract from my current collecting focus.
Your not alone there. Ordered a pro builder builder today. I have 55 cards ready to go. Super excited to add more. I feel now buying a psa card, not necessarily one I get joy out off just to help complete a set, all I see is money. I’ve found much more enjoyment from binders lately
I was quite happy with the collection I had earlier this year, but all this recent hype has me all FOMO for the things I don’t have - never truly wanted in the first place - until they were more desired by others. We have no choice but to adjust - or just keep doing what I was doing, enjoying my binders.
Thanks for this thread, it’s been good therapy for me.
That’s exactly my problem, everything has to match. So even though I already had about half 1st ed holos…I had to get a complete unlimited holo set so they match lol.
@originalera Glad to hear you finished your binder sets. I’ll have to checkout the updates. Cards without the first edition stamp feel naked to me but I did have to go with unlimited for base set due to price. I finished my binder sets awhile ago. Currently working on adding more graded cards to my collection.
Adjusting collection goals is very important if prices exceed what a person is willing to pay. I pretty much started myself out knowing if I wanted all graded cards I wouldn’t be able to complete all my goals. So I picked up light played to near mint 1st edition binder cards.
Granted my collection would probably be worth more if I choose all graded cards. But at the same time I’m much less tempted to sell. Setting collection goals is very important and satisfying when you finish a goal you’ve been working on!
