I recently bought this Japanese CD Promo Blastoise #9 PSA 10 (cert. 65573403).
The card and holo look authentic to me, but I noticed something strange on the back: the N and T in “MONSTERS” have different lower serifs/shapes compared with every other Japanese old-back card I own, including cards from 1999.
I’ve also checked several CD Promo Blastoise cards online and haven’t found another one like mine.
Is this a known Japanese old-back printing variation, or could this be a red flag?
Has anyone seen this exact N/T typography on a confirmed authentic card?
@Quuador, I’d really appreciate your opinion if you have a moment.
Front looks like theyre the same angles on some of the WOTC printings. Backs too blurry but from what ive seen most of the japanese angles are either a 45° or i think 52.5° magenta angle. Could def be a good fake
Get a full frontal? Cant see it on the cert lookup
But I’m afraid I’d have to agree with @fourthstartcg, based on the picture of the front: the card, the PSA label, and even the PSA case are all fake. The PSA label seems to use the wrong font; the ‘21’ water marks in the case at the bottom are too high; and the colors of the card itself are slightly too dark. The artwork is also lacking the red orb inside Blastoise’s water cannon:
I must admit I’m not sure what the red orb represents in the artwork, but if you search for ‘Japanese CD Blastoise’ on eBay, all of them have that red orb in the cannon, and yours doesn’t..
Sorry to disappoint you. I hope you’ve bought it recently and are able to get your money back.
Thank you so much everyone for your feedback and help Thanks to all your comments and the details you pointed out, I’m now certain that it’s a fake. I’ll definitely be much more careful in the future! A huge thank you to the whole community for your kindness and expertise
