Why do guys buy cards ?
Is it to be a flipper and resell?
Is it a particular card you need in a set?
Is it a favourite card/artwork?
Or was it just cheap at the time 
All questions have an answer, for me it’s sets and favourite cards. Only cards I ever sell are cards I don’t require from sets (any psa 9s and below). But either way I wouldn’t sell them at dumb prices

it’s a healthy hobby that keeps me occupied to keep from falling into old, unhealthy habits.
Owning the cards that I collect isn’t even the main motivation for me, it’s the process of searching, sorting, etc. that sustains me and that I value the most.
To be a filthy scummy flipper Though actually I end up liking the cards so much that I won’t sell them haha. Except the ones which I don’t care about, I sell those off.

This at one point, wrecked me financially though… 
Seriously though, to recapture my childhood. Most of my favorite memories from under age 10 involve Pokemon in some way and the cards were my favorite. Nothing was more exciting than going to Ames on a Saturday morning and then coming home and watching my Pokemon VHS tapes for the entire afternoon.
Never understood the hate toward flippers. I can see if you’re walking into a Walmart or Target and buying 10-20 copies of a single item and then selling it for triple the price, yeah. If you’re on eBay and see a great deal why wouldn’t you buy it to make some cash? Maybe you do it as a second job or to support the hobby for yourself? Nothing wrong there, money makes the world go round.
I buy them to show off on forums so I can have a little validation & relief from my insecurities. I want people to know I have lots of expendable income, helps with my self esteem issues. Also, I have a girlfriend and you’re all fat and losers! Whew, now I feel better about myself. Thanks guys. Oh, P.S. Step your games up, Bros.

The hate comes from the fact that flippers can lower the value of something they own. It’s usually very 1 sided, because chances are if it’s a card they desperately want they’ll be happy because now they can get it cheaper.
Anything that negatively effects them they hate, but anything that helps them they’ll love.
