What's the deal with this unsold illustrator?

October 2019 was 6 months before Covid actually started to affect the rest of the world (March 2020). In terms of Pokémon cards, March 2020 saw a fire sale of a ton of cards as people were nervous about the pandemic and a potential market crash. Then shortly after the boom happened.

So the 2019 sale has nothing to do with covid.

I don’t know what it is about the Illustrator that irks people so much.

People don’t do this for 1st Edition Base Set Charizard. They don’t do it for 1st Edition Base Set booster boxes. They don’t do for it Neo Destiny Shinings or Gold Stars. They only do it for the Illustrator.

I remember when the PSA 7 went for $375k, we seriously had some people on the forum saying “I TOLD YOU SO!” because they were happy that it “sold low.” As if $375k for a PSA 7 wasn’t a ridiculously massive sale.

Why are there so many people in this hobby who try to delegitimize the Illustrator? It’s so weird.

I’m the last person to “delegitimize” the illustrator and I don’t think anyone really does either except people who clearly just aren’t in the hobby. What I do want to get to is how illustrator is inflated as hell and it just seems obvious to me why it’s getting 0 bid auction endings at near half mill when it isn’t obvious to you. Like I understand illustrator is a great card and very low amounts in circulation, but I just don’t see how the price is sustainable.

Now here is a key stinger that might make some people here butt hurt: cards don’t need to have huge growth multipliers to be “legitimized”, I personally think stability is the key to a sustainable hobby along with natural growth. It should be clear as day that everything that occurred for Pokémon as well as many other TCG, collectibles, etc in the last 3-4 years was clearly unnatural growth. I personally think when higher end items are overall stable, the market is in a healthy spot and right now it is just full of volatility, uncertainty, and most of all speculation. Ty for listening to my Ted talk from a true collector

Forget about the card, starting any auction at half a million dollars is the best way to get no bids. No auction house or sensible seller auctions a card that way because it isn’t actually an auction, it’s hedging your bet.

That’s why it didn’t sell. Not because of the tired hot takes that have been said a thousand times for the past decade regardless of the price.

I mean I agree yes, but it also does imply that no one is interested in it at that price point unless the 0.000001% off chance that the person who has the financial capacity for one in that price range is just oblivious to the eBay listing which is possible, but improbable to say the least. If I were to make a gamble, my money would be on that if this was auctioned with a starting bid of $1, the auction would end lower unless people ego bid with dopamine pumping in.

You think it would end.. lower than this auction that had no bids?

Wow amazing

Do you have a patreon?

I actually did see this about a week ago and almost made a thread but it slipped my mind.

Folks, you’re way overthinking this. There’s no reason to own an entire Illustrator when you already own fractional shares in the one at Logan Paul’s house.
