how long till they can start competing in dog shows?
Without getting too into all the details, in AKC 4 months old is when they can start showing but they cannot earn points towards a championship title until 6 months old.
And by dog shows you mean those obstacle things or are there some shows specific for the breed?
When I say dog shows I’m referencing something like Westminster, Crufts, or the dog thing that airs right after Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. With Sylvia I do dog shows and other events (racing, lure coursing, and hunting) which I hope Bourbon will be able to do but she needs to wait until she is a year old. And besides being a year old she needs to be qualified/certified to do those events, except for hunting as we can do that on our own. Racing and Lure Coursing is exclusive to sighthounds (borzoi, whippets, greyhounds, salukis, etc) and it’s super fun to watch and the people you meet make it better.
All the events have titles that people can earn so in dog shows that’s the CH (Champion) and GCH (Grand Champion) titles. GCH has additional levels but you don’t see them very often because of the time and money needed.
In racing you’re trying to get your GRC/ORC (Gazehound/Oval Racing Champion) or SGRC/SORC (Supreme Gazehound/Oval Racing Champion) titles.
In lure coursing you’re trying to get your FC/FCh (Field Champion), LCM/LCX (Lure Courser of Merit/Lure Courser Excellent) titles, or the coveted NFC (National Field Champion) and BII (Best in International Invitational) titles. The NFC and BII titles are awarded once a year to one dog at special national events; I believe only one or two dogs have ever won both titles. If your dog has a CH and FC they get combined into the DC (Dual Champion) title.
In hunting there are titles available but I, personally, do not participate in organized hunting events just because how far I have to travel and they’re kinda super secretive about everything. The titles available are CC/NACC (Coursing Champion/North American Coursing Champion) and CM/NAAC (Courser of Merit/North American Accomplished Courser) with an additional title being BFC Winner (Borzoi Fall Classic Winner). The hunting titles are NOT easy to get and some dogs will get all the points necessary but will never meet the placement and/or kills necessary to recieve a title. Basically any dog with any of the hunting titles is a badass dog.
Sorry for the info dump
I just really love this stuff and how much fun my dogs and I have. Genuinely the only reason I get out of bed and go to work, besides all the friendships and great memories made by these events. All these titles are also US specific, things are very different in outside the US.
Also, she is a baby but looks so big.
They grow like weeds, she will be tall and lanky in a few months lol
