Has anyone been following the Beckett news? On September 9th they took their website down for “maintenance”. All digital services are still down. The image on the bottom is what the first splash page read before being updated.
Yeah I guess it’s a little suspicious that whatever they are doing is taking this long but I don’t think this is related to their data breach. Seems like they’re never going to acknowledge that.
Just a guess but maybe they’re getting a new website and whomever is in charge of that process is handling it in a very late 90s, early 2000s kind of way with a maintenance / “under construction” kind of page
They may, for whatever reason, feel that its easier to completely shut off their website and put up that placeholder than it is to limit user capabilities / stop submissions through the existing site forms while they do whatever maintenance they’re doing.
They can be down for however long imo as long as they do come back with a new website and pop reports are updated. I placed a call about a missing report and was told they just haven’t added it yet (been 1 year+) but yet were able to confirm the pop count. That’s great if every time I buy or sell a card the kind lady in TX answers the phone for me and confirms pops lol On top of it some error cards have 2-3 categories going.
In the year 2026 all those changes are already prestaged and the cutover would be under an hour. This whole unscheduled downtime going on 4 days feel much more like a cyberattack or data breach again.
With your web dev background, you’d have to think this amount of downtime and lack of communication about why it’s down has red flags written all over it. If it was as simple as merging into the PSA systems and environment, they would have sold and stated it as such. And in no world would one take down their entire site just to stop submissions.
Usually when you try to patch such old systems, you then have to make other package upgrades in order to get the patch. A lot of times it will be a major release that changes the package’s functionality and it becomes whack a mole of patches. You can fork and back port security patches yourself but sometimes that goes against various code compliance.
Migrating and reindexing data can be a very long process, sometimes it can take days.
I find it weird there was no email or public announcement that I saw, which makes it feel more like an immediate response to an issue.
Maybe. I’m just going by what feels more likely. It’s not as simple as updating the website since there is a physical backend that has to be integrated too. It’s possible it could be something more sinister
Youre right, they appear to be using AWS which makes it pretty easy to not have to go through a down period like this.
However, despite what the current state of the job market might be or feel like, there’s plenty of folks in positions where simply having the capability to do something the right way doesn’t mean they are prepared to
If it’s worth anything, a UK Beckett middleman, probably the biggest in the UK, has said that Beckett has reopened their submission windows for a very very small time, and has not said when they will reopen it again even in 2027.
There’s just a lot of weirdness going on at the moment. I think they’re having a massive overhaul of essentially everything… Which was desperately needed.
At the end of the day, any change? Rebecca is beneficial.
They should be updating their AWS placeholder every day or two if there wasn’t any shenanigans going on. I wonder if they even got locked out of their placeholder page
Website appears totally offline tonight. Not even a redirect splash page.
I found out they had stopped regular submissions a month earlier and other people had brought up the concern. Some even have had orders received in Late July with no updates. Sounds like this is more of a 4-6 week blackout. Maybe they are going away since they are cheaper than PSA.
Or maybe tomorrow it comes back and they just did a poor job of communicating the maintenance schedule?
