What do you guys think of surging sparks as a investing opportunity?

I’m so glad you said this since I gave exactly vivid voltage as an example and it was not received lmao

Buying a box or a few at mrsp and just forgetting about it for a few years is a fine choice.

The problem is I question your ability to forget about it or hold it for long enough to be a good decision

Maybe save up for that rocket set pokemon teased, I bet it will be a popular one!!
I haven’t heard anything about this surging spark set.

If you really want to invest in modern, your best bet is to wait until Twilight Masquerade or 151 are reprinted, specifically booster boxes of TWM or booster bundles of 151.

The upcoming Rocket or Trainer’s pokemon sets could be bangers. As others have pointed out, Surging Sparks is fairly blah overall, and imo Paradise Dragona is a major letdown with choice of pokemon for SAR and AR’s. Only the Latias seems to really catch my attention, and I don’t think that card paired with a Pikachu SAR are going to be enough to really elevate the set.

Oh and another note, be aware of the fact that “Pokeinvestors” and “Pokestonkers” are going to hype the shit out of the set, so do not get caught up in the FOMO.

another factor to consider is time.

let’s say you buy a box at $100. you’ll probably be so excited about owning the box as an “investment” that you’ll be checking ebay solds on a daily basis to see how your investment is growing. if the price rises, you could be constantly fretting about when the correct time is to sell the box to “cash in” on your investment.

if you can truly buy the box(es), put them aside, and not worry about the price for multiple years, then it’s probably fine - but (coming from personal experience) it can take a lot of time out of your life to keep monitoring prices for an item that sells extremely frequently

With a minimal income, you’ll find yourself much better enjoying the hobby just buying what you like. What’s the point of collecting if you don’t enjoy what you’ve collected? If you would enjoy having sealed booster boxes of this set in your collection, then sure buy some. Otherwise, don’t.

the people investing in modern are largely not the same people who invested in modern pre 2020

It doesn’t really do anything different, like 151, so I can’t see it doing anything different than it’s fellow S/V sets.
Not Older. Not Rarer. Minter? Who knows…

With enough patience, almost any set will appreciate given sufficient time. However, I would encourage you to conduct a cost-benefit analysis. Is tying up dozens or hundreds of dishwashing dollars in sealed product worth it when you are a teenager? I would think not.

You don’t know where you are going to be in a few years once you graduate, let alone what interests you may develop, hobbies you may leave behind, or adult responsibilities that will rise up. Having liquidity, even with small amounts of money, will allow you to move through life easier at this age.

When it’s time to sell, why would someone buy from you? There will be hundreds or thousands of trusted sellers with similar or larger amounts of sealed product at better or equivalent prices.

As I have recommended time and again, don’t waste your teen years trying to make money off of modern Pokemon. There is so much more to life than money, and you will have that opportunity when you are older and established.

Work hard, do well in school, and collect cards that you like. That is a recipe for success.

Dyl speaking like a true friend here and I whole heartedly agree. Have fun, do things in person, study hard and find the little moments that spark joy in your life.
