i know youd sell my friendship for a pack of shiny fates
New perspective and experience in different market conditions. If aiming for some type of financial growth, it’s best to stay involved during good and boring times so you get a better intuition on when to sell.
Both times have pros/cons. Try not letting being priced out of specific cards force you to hyper fixate on the negative.
My thoughts are that its great to keep the franchise running strong. The cards are kind of crazy, but with kids getting traction from online engagement it really makes me smile knowing that Pokemon will outlive me probably. Its like your pet that never ages, or a band that produces the same good music from 30 years ago you loved. The relevancy is joyous!
I agree with this sentiment, I think the coolest thing is that kids of today will have nostalgia for Pokemon in the same way that 90s kids do. Pokemon continues to find new fans, and that’s how it grows and evolves through the generations.

Benefits:
- Selling becomes more profitable
- Goals become clearer, as your dollar does not stretch as far
- Rare cards come out of the woodwork as people cash in
- A proportion of buyers will become long-term collectors
- Pokemon conversations become more varied, as new people ask old questions in new ways
- Pokemon entertainment increases (e.g., box openings, play throughs, Pokemon themed toks, an explosion of merchandise, etc.), if you’re interested in that
- Your friends and family may understand your hobby a little more than usual
- We get to experience the Pokemon 90s craze as adults today, and kids today get to experience their own 2020s craze
- Pokemon fan art explodes with interest
I love your second point. Its really true.
As we all know there are challenges associated with popularity spikes but you have to contrast popular periods to unpopular periods. Like imagine you seriously collecting Labubus 5 years from now. No one gets it, it’s hard to source stuff because there’s like 20 sellers and you know all of them. There aren’t many people in the hobby and generally they are all weird. It’s just unpleasant in a different way

It’s subjective, but there is a special buzz in the air and online during a moment of peak popularity. I think about when Pokemon Go released or during the 25th Anniversary. Logan Paul entered the hobby, Post Malone had a weird CG concert, Collect-a-con’s were new and exciting. These things might be kind of lame under a microscope but they really added to the overall excitement of being a participant during the time.
