If you’re here because you’ve seen in the media that Pokémon card prices are exploding:
The fact that you’re hearing about it now means you weren’t early. We’re likely already near the end of the hype cycle.
Wait for the cycle to cool off instead of jumping in at peak prices.

Option 2: You Just Want to Open Some Boosters
Sign up for restock notifications on Amazon.
Try playing the TCG — at pre-releases, players also get booster packs.
Set yourself a budget.
Stay away from Whatnot.
———-
Option 3: You Want to Rebuild Your Childhood Collection
The cards you had as a kid were probably in rough condition too.
Many of those same cards can still be found for affordable prices in played or poor condition.
————
Option 4: If you’re set on buying graded slabs
Go ahead, buy mine at current prices
But seriously:
Be extremely careful with low-pop cards that suddenly skyrocket in PSA 10.
Prices are incredibly easy to manipulate.
Collectibles are one of the least regulated financial markets out there.
It’s easier here than almost anywhere else to:
Fake sales
Influence perceived market value
Push narratives to drive buyers in a certain direction
Just because a card sold for a record price doesn’t mean you’ll get that price too.
You don’t want to be the person still holding the “record sale” card when the market collapses.
I find it is the easiest to find friends in the hobby by just being yourself and collecting what you like—if you’re at a card show, card shop, or trade night likeminded people will gravitate towards you
Just make sure you’re collecting what you care about and not whatever is hype or being shilled/pumped. I for one moved totally away from grading a year or so ago and I’m having an absolute blast building my WOTC master sets
As long as you stay away from the scammy junk, the hobby stays mostly pure. There are lots of normal folks out there who still collect due to nostalgia and the love of Pokemon, so just try not to lose track of your good intentions. The minute you start thinking about the hobby as money first and collecting second, you’ll know you’ve lost yourself
The costs to get access to them are trivial compared to the crazy prices brand new people are paying for things, though lol. Worth spending $20 to do some due diligence before buying a $20k card imo
I’d first recommend them to search information regarding cardboard in sites such as Bulbapedia, Pokumon, this forum, etc in order that they set a goal. For example, during 2022 -2023 my main goal in cardboard was trying to find a Pokémon Card Trainers Magazine Vol.19 available for sale and purchasing it.
Honestly if you don’t have a main goal, you won’t know how to buy exactly, which, in most cases, ends in impulsive purchases … I learned it the hard way. I’m not saying that you must restrict yourself from buying other stuff from TCG. A goal helps you to know what exactly you are looking for.
Then, other suggestions would be:
Don’t use rubber bands for cards. Use sleeves, binders, toploaders, etc
Don’t let yourself be carried away by FOMO.
Buy what you like, not what others tell you
Don’t see cardboard as a 100% investment.
Don’t buy cards during first day: cards are generally overpriced … wait until 1-2 months after the expansion is released
Generally, RAW cards are the best option
Make friends & contacts … Enjoy the process
For Species Collecting:
For Species Collectors that wants to collect all variants in all languages of a certain monster, I’d recommend:
Research about variants of the monster you’re interested in collecting
Set a certain language as high priority. For example, in my case it’s Portuguese & Spanish.
If you’re from Latin America or Spain, take advantage that Spanish & Latin American Spanish cards can be found locally
Make a spreadsheet to track your progress. It requires research, but it’s worth it.
Buy singles, don’t be stupid by buying from scalpers or getting desperate by ripping overpriced packs, if you can’t get the English version go for any foreign version that’s cheaper, who are you buying for, yourself or for randos on the internet? Enjoy the art.
Collect Pokemon plushies instead. Or Pokemon figures. Or collect Pokemon in the games and start filling a living dex or a shiny dex.
I’m not joking. If you like Pokemon and want to collect something related, any of the above is much better, as it’s not swamped by scalpers, scammers and market bros. You can actually focus on collecting, and not worry about being outpriced within the next 48 hours. You will get an actual feeling of accomplishment from collecting a new piece, instead of suffering the constant fear of not being able to get the next piece.
In short, collect the things that people don’t make money from. It will be better for your mind AND wallet.
Collect what you like, invest in what isn’t yet hyped.
If you psuedo “invest”, it’s the perfect time to be dumping high- graded set cards (especially modern) while there’s now a (comparative) dip in low-print, original art promos and prizes that can be scooped up.
