This auction will be massive! I remember when this sold back in 2011 and knew it would completely Our honorable president that price down the road.

Gretzky rookies are such a pain to grade. My personal copy is a 7, and is aesthetically pleasing for me. I also had a PSA 8 Gretzky. For pokemon that sounds week, but getting an 8 gretzky at this point is more difficult than getting a 10 1st Ed base charizard. Majority have to be purchased graded, as ebay doesn’t allow US seller’s to sell them ungraded. This is because people trim them to make the cards look better, plus there are a shitload of fakes. PSA does not grade trimmed cards. Even some graded cards (BGS, KSA) are trimmed, as not all companies have the same standards as PSA.

Anyway, this will be historic! I don’t know if or when there will be another PSA 10 copy, it is literally the only one out of about 4,000 copies graded!

damn that’s pretty interesting man. How much do PSA 7’s go for?

depends! There are 2 different regional releases of the wayne gretzky rookie, the o-pee-chee and topps. O-pee-chee is the more prestigious print run and while you could have picked up a psa 7 for about 900 like 4-5 months ago they have spiked up recently to around 1500. PSA 8 o-pee-chee gretzky cards have been going insane lately with even bigger leaps in price.

I get so giddy reading about stuff like this and I don’t even collect it. Haha

Exactly! I attribute the 8 bump to the lack of 9’s on the market. I remember when there was at least 1 or 2 9’s listed on ebay, and now they rarely appear and go for an insane amount. There is one currently listed with a 28k bid.

Oh and @fritz I personally only do O-Pee-Chee hockey cards. The OPC 1979 gretzky in particular is much more difficult to earn a high grade than its Topps counterpart. In hockey, anything pre 1990 OPC typically earns more than its Topps counterpart.

Oooooh neat stuff.

Came across this searching some of it. Very neat.

There is a seller who had a couple of those, cut them and graded the gretzky rookies.

Any idea on the grades they got @smpratte? I am sure there must be some other cards on that sheet of decent value too?

They were mostly higher grades but with other grading companies. There is a company called KSA which is based out of Canada. O-Pee-Chee is a Canadian company as well so a good amount of Gretzky cards are graded by KSA. However KSA will grade sheet cut and/or most trimmed cards. If you see a KSA 10 opc gretzky it is most likely trimmed.

The Gretzky ended up selling for $465,000!
