Valuable collecting lesson of the day.

As the discordians know I collect merchandise and memorabilia from the dot hack videogame franchise. I tend to be an impulse buyer when I have money and the item is rare or unique. This tends to work out well for me except one time I bought a fake funko for $1000. Shortly after this event I had the following event happen.

6 months ago a developer plaque for one of the dot hack games came up for sale. Not knowing how to authenticate it I convinced myself that it wasn’t an authentic item.

6 months later and it sold. All my dot hack friends assumed it was authentic so I had to go seek the truth myself.

I ended up finding the linkedin page of the guy whose name is on the plaque and messaged him.

I then dreamt about it all night. About how I would get this long detailed reply in how the plaque was fake and I was right not to buy. I wake up and the first thing i do is check the messages in my LinkedIn. I see that the guy has responded.

“Yeah those were given to members of the QA team. I don’t even remember getting rid of mine.”

FML I woke up to the nightmare.

Sometimes it’s better to continue to be an impulse buyer then to second guess yourself after a burn.

Idk man, kanade chan convinced me to never listen to your advice, and since you literally sleep with her every single night i think she deserves my trust.

But that fake funko pop story was quite a movie plot.

She’s probably right tbh

Probably a good thing you didn’t buy it anyway :relieved:

Maybe. There were issues with it that needed to be fixed like missing glass but it would’ve been a great display piece.

Buy first, ask questions later. the mantra of a true collector.

Exactly. How else can I get ahead of the other collectors lol

Hindsight is always 20/20.

True. At least theres the knowledge that the plaques were gifts to the members of the QA team. The may be more that hit the market in the future.

How do you identify a fake funko?

The box had paper decals pasted on it and fake exclusive stickers.

Bite test like a gold coin.

Sorry to hear it. I have 3 funkos. I am going to look them over after hearing this

I was bad at reading the title and description. You should be fine with yours.

I believe there’s actual, physical Crimson VS cards out there but I can never find any of them. Have you come across any before?

EDIT: Or maybe not? Why do I keep thinking there’s real Crimson VS cards… hmmm…

I haven’t really done anything with crimson vs but I checked the channel dedicated to it in the server im a part of and I didn’t see any mention of physical cards.

Just updating the thread with a photo of the plaque

Easy thing with funkos is check the feet :ok_hand: should have serial code on them. If they don’t then they’re fake but a lot of the fakes are easy to spot
