USPS saying item I shipped was delivered to original sender

So I shipped a theme deck earlier this week. Just checked USPS tracking to see if the item was delivered, and it said “delivered to original sender.” The status update prior to that said “addressee unknown.”

Does this mean that the package is now being sent back to me? I’ve never heard of anything like this before.

For what it’s worth, the person who bought this item from me had zero feedback. I just messaged them now on eBay asking if they had received the package.

Update: waited on hold with the post office for an hour and eventually just hung up. I am going to head to my local post office tomorrow just to get some clarification.

Amazingly enough, this buyer has not gotten back to me.

Has anyone ever had something like this happen before?

“delivered” to original sender would mean they already retuned it to you. I would wait to see if you get anymore updates.

Weird. It’s still in the state of the buyer’s location, so my guess was that they delivered it to the post office there to prepare to send it back to me.

Buyer still has not responded to my message. Weird situation.

I recently had a similar problem with USPS where they stopped tracking the item and it got the alert status, but the receiver confirmed me that the cards arrived. USPS tracking is not always accurate, I would just wait another few days before waisting too much time with clueless USPS employees.

Buyer taking a few hours to respond isn’t that unusual, not everyone is glued to their pc’s to check ebay messages after all, and email notifications for said messages often arrive with a long delay.
But ye, tracking info isn’t always correct. I’ve had a package I sent at one point getting marked as “returned to sender” as well, but it was just sitting at the local post office waiting for the addressee to pick it up since they weren’t home when postal services tried to deliver.

Update: so I called up his local post office and they have the package there for him. Apparently, the post office that was originally in possession of the item could not deliver to his address, so it was then shipped to a post office nearer to him where he has to come in and pick up the item.

Buyer still has not gotten back to me, but I messaged him again telling him that he just needs to go into his post office and pick it up.

So it looks like all is well and good!
