Unusual Ways Collecting Has Benefitted You?

Next year marks 10 years of collecting , started when I was 19, when I was ending my first year of university
I’ve grown in many ways thanks to collecting ! I realized when I started that there’s a lot of people out there, that like pokemon or even video games/anime/nerd stuff that are older or the same age as me. So through the years I’ve met a lot of people in real life that have become some of my best friends. Collecting benefitted my Social life.

And the aspect it impacted the most is my interest in the marketing and business world and anything to do with selling (I guess this will probably be the same for a lot of people). I’ve noticed I’ve become quite business saavy just through regular internet sales: the do-s and don’t-s, SEO, advertisement, investing, market trends, behavior analysis etc…
It’s come to the point where I’d enjoy being my own boss someday, but not in the Pokemon field, because I will never want to make my hobby into a business :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I still get weird looks from random french people I meet when I say I collect Pokemon though, some change their attitude when it comes to the money it’s worth

Collecting helped me acknowledge the all or nothing mentality that was preventing me from appreciating what I already had. It also taught me patience.

I think this wins the thread.

It has taught me so much: the dunning-kruger effect, the 10,000 hour rule, the difference between results from randomness and and results from skill, how cravings for material things are difficult to satiate, how overspending can harm personal finances and how easy it is to overspend…

I think it gives me a hobby. I also think as we get older it’s important to have a hobby and something to look forward to. My friend loves Lego and my mom does crafts. I noticed it makes my mom really happy and I like to think I’ll be like that when I’m older with PokĆ©mon

The first and most obvious, would be the amazing friends I’ve formed along the way! :star_struck: Heck, I even had @PokemonRadar at my wedding :joy:

In all seriousness, having people alongside me, who really understand the passion, is probably what has got me to where I’m at in my collecting career.

Love you brotha! Definitely this has been the biggest impact on collecting for me is the relationships that have been made and continue to grow.

Also, collecting has lead to a career for me. Whatnot, rare candy, TikTok and who knows where to next. Went from a shit sales job I hated, barely able to pay rent to working at a huge social media company is still mind blowing to me. So much left to accomplish. Thank you PokƩmon cards.

A sense of belonging and feeling apart of something.

I think most people know that I used to make a lot of art in Dallas, and not to toot my own horn but for the sake of the response I will, my art was being seen everywhere and had been written on by every major publication in Dallas. I worked very hard to get there.

Covid happened and because of medical issues, mainly asthma, I did not feel safe to get together with my friends to make art again. I had nothing but time.

Thus I discovered PokĆ©mon again back in 2019 because of a suggested video by @PokemonRadar on YouTube that led me to not only collecting a bunch of stuff I love, it made for some of the best friendships I ever had (you lot know who you are) The hardest part is not seeing the friends you’ve made online unless it’s for events or impromptu trips, but like I said in the beginning, the sense of belonging and feeling apart of something has sincerely fulfilled me where I am not as depressed anymore like I was when I walked through those doors to e4 being the new guy looking for friends to talk about pokemon.

Recently told I have no impulsivity. To which I said, ā€œThat’s a good thing.ā€ I thank the hobby for that.
