For me personally, I think the card template is not as aesthetically pleasing as Pokemon or MTG. Considering the topic, I tried to think of the most dramatic way to express that opinion.
I am also jack of sets being released every 3 months, each with 36746982 ultra rares. I think 5 ultras per set is a very nice number and tbh never minded when they dropped it a little to give people a breather (secret wonders, bw base/emerging powers). I honestly don’t understand how kids are supposed to get into collecting when they maybe get a couple packs a week for 12 weeks and BAM a new set gets stuffed down their throat without them even finishing half a set as it is. Lets not forget this is still largely a child focused franchise.
There will always be exceptions like that scarface kid weighing 1038 cases on his kitchen table but the fact is that the majority of people dont have this luxury.
As much as I’m considering grading a few cards, I think PSA is overrated and sometimes inconsistent with grading. I also think the design of their labels are dry and uninteresting and take away from the aesthetic of the cards they show off. They lack creative design.
Which is why she’s the other Pokemon I actively collect.
Here’s one that’s in my mind after rereading some reactions on Pokebeach to XY10 being based around Mega Alakazam: I don’t blame Uri Geller for suing Nintendo. Every time the thought of Kadabra never getting another card comes up on TCG sites, there’s all sorts of wonderful comments from Pokemon fans about hoping Uri Geller dies, etc just because they won’t see their precious Kadabra on another card during his lifetime.
The fact that he’s on record saying that Nintendo turned him into a “evil occult character” is ridiculous and overreacting on his part, but it’s not his fault that Gamefreak and the people in charge of the TCG had the short-sightedness to a) basically name a Pokemon after a living person and base it around things the living person is famous for and b) release a card depicting that Pokemon as “evil” (Dark Kadabra).
It’s bit of a shame that there aren’t new Kadabra cards but I understand that Nintendo has this fear of getting into more trouble about it.
And about Kadabra being evil occult character, I think it has something else behind it too than just the Dark Kadabra card. Because I think Abra-Kadabra-Alakazam line’s design got inspiration from something rather evil. Have you seen what baphomet looks like? This is just a theory of mine, nothing confirmed. Of course they have no actual horns or wings, but the shape of their head matches. Kadabra even has a star on his forehead. And they kind of look like creatures with a goat’s head but humanish body.
And as I put Alakazam on Google images, I found some fan art and realized I’m probably not alone with this theory…
I think if the Alakazam line were supposed to be based on satanic imagery like that, the people in Japan would have either changed the designs for fear of offending the west, or somebody would have criticized their designs enough to get them updated by now.
They altered Jynx’s design for the west pretty quickly after Carole Boston Weatherford complained about her looking like a blackface stereotype, and Brock got booted from the anime during the Orange Islands simply because the directors were afraid that America would find his eyes offensive (even though in this case, nobody did).
Anyway, first off X&Y needs to end. Second, no more japanese letters on my english megas please. Third, newer promos have better holo pattern than any set holo rare cards out there. Finally, Psa needs to revaluate their grades. Their (6 ex-mt) grade makes little to no sense. It almost seems like they’re saying it’s a 6 & a 9. Ex-nm makes more sense.
