I really find that a lot of the raw and ungraded WOTC era cards & sets are undervalued, especially early 2000s products. The packs and sealed boxes have gone up a ton on these sets, and yet a lot of the product on the market is cheap in my view. I mean, just recently I picked up the entire Neo Genesis 1st Edition non-holo set in NM pack fresh for $250. That to me is a giveaway price for a relatively historic Pokemon set. Granted the other Neo sets are subjectively better, I still found this to be a great price when you consider how much a box (or even a pack) of 1st Edition Neo Genesis sells for now.
Eventually over many years the scarcity should increase, and these old sets should climb in value I expect. To me, the sealed box prices vs raw cards is way out of whack in Pokemon and the gap should close some day I feel.
PSA 8 holos can also be a bargain as well, at times they can be a borderline mint card and make for a great value on some set cards out there. I’m still not always comfortable on PSA 10 pricing on some Pokemon cards, but that’s just me. I like buying NM/Mint as well just fine for completing sets and collecting goals and I think right now there is a ton of value there on many great cards.
JP exclusive decks like the VS Movie decks and Chikorita / Totodile intro deck.
Feel like there’s still a lot of ppl that don’t know about these. They also have good history like tying into a movie, featuring cards that showcase the pokemon in the settings of that movie. The sealed ones aren’t really all that easy to find either, but I remember seeing the jirachi wishmaker one go for less than 200 sealed. I think latios/latias decks are pretty well known though.
Non trading card sized items with good artwork (mostly jp pokecenter exclusive stuff) like postcards, art prints, sleeves and playmats etc.
it’s really good art you can’t find in the tcg thats not really showcased too often.
For the sleeves- there’s a lot of good trainer artwork that’s better than what we see in the TCG full arts.
At this point there’s so much good sleeve artwork i’m considering doing a sleeve only binder
I definitely think “TCG Adjacent” items are highly unappreciated. Not only are they not widely collected, they’re not widely documented. There’s a lot of uncharted territory out there.
The French one is a stand-out for me. Unique Pikachu art, gold holo border, Illustrated by Nishida the creator of Pikachu and Illustrator of The Pikachu Illustrator. I think the fact that they’re not all English or Japanese may be what is holding them back.
Agreed. I think it’s faor to say that this kind of cards is the single least commonly known category of OG era cards. On the other hand, isn’t it incredibly awesome that you can still discover hidden oldschool gems like that AND just go buy them without going bankrupt?
The 2003 VS Movie Commemoration Pack is really on of the best “bang for your buck” mini sets you can have at this point in time.
I dont have one in a 10, but it really is probably the most out of wack price point I can think of on a single card. Everyone always points to foreign cards but honestly 99% of the hobby will never collect a card from a language they dont speak no matter what the art looks like since the majority of all of this is nostalgia based. That’s why just saying oh foreign cards have the same art but are so cheap so they’re undervalued does not makes sense to me. That mainly goes for foreign set cards. I have come to realize the value of foreign exclusives and such and do think there is an argument to be made there
100% on point @muk! The fact you can still get Forina’s Jirachi, one of the most beautiful Jirachi cards ever printed, for like $10-$15 NM raw is insane.
Crystals. They are usually overshadowed by gold stars but the print run for both aquapolis and skyridge are on par, if not less than some of the ex-era cards.
In particular - PSA 8 crystals - best value for price and condition wise.
Is that the one that I won via auction and then you offered the seller more? hahaha. I’m still slightly salty about that (mainly because I’m now willing to pay 3x as much for the card!).
The difference between crystals and gold stars are pull rates. Crystals were much easier to pull than gold stars (Skyridge crystals, for instance, are only very slightly rarer than holos on a per-card basis). That said, crystals are amazing cards without question!
True but what I am saying is the scarcity for crystal is still on par with gold stars. There are three gold stars per set, pull rate is 1 out of 2 boxes so to get all three, you would need 6 boxes
Skyridge has 6 crystals, pull rate is about 1? per box and to get all six, you will need 6 boxes. See how it is the same overall?
It may seem like gold stars are harder to get, but there are less of them per set. If I only want crystal hooh or celebi, then it would take approx the same amount of boxes even if crystals have better pull rate.
EDIT: I been informed my pull rate is wrong, it is approx 2 per box so to get all six, you will need 3 skyridge boxes. That said, I still think they are underappreciated due to it being one of the last secret rares from WOTC and very low supply due to aquapolis and skyridge being super underprinted.
