I see that Goldin has some auctions for 2014 World Championship No. 2 and No. 4 Trainer cards - the first year that the cards were full art. I was surprised to see that for the No. 2 Trainer there is three graded by PSA (1 PSA 10 and 2 PSA 9) and 6 graded by CGC (3 CGC 10 and 3 CGC 9.5), as I thought that there were 6 of each trophy card (3 age brackets across TCG and VCG). Feels like this has to be wrong through since 9 have been graded lol. I vaguely remember mentions of “extra” copies of some trophy cards but unsure if this is limited to a few cards or if it is more common. Any color on how many of these cards were made / are out there floating around?
Youve got to take into account how many people couldve potentially cross graded them, and resubmitted as well. Technically the pop could be 20 graded copies, or 50 copies in the future. I would focus on actual scarcity rather than look at the pop report when it comes to these types of cards.
Lots of people who cross-grade/crack and resubmit don’t have their old certs deactivated

If a specific card has 6 copies, Pokémon didn’t just print 6 separate cards. They printed the 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and 4th place on the same sheet. A sheet has xx number of cards on it. They likely printed a few extras of each card in case of issues with printing. Those copies either were destroyed or our friend Akabanee took them home
2014 has a lot of extra copies
As others have said extra copies do exist. A former Pokemon employee sold a fair chunk of them not to long ago. similar to the extra art academy cards. Those went thru cgc for the most part.
I know dubsy had a set of full art trophies cracked from cgc to send to psa and dont think the pop updated.
I know cgc had zero interest in indicating the difference between awarded copies and extra copies as I asked them about one with perfectly clear provenance if they would do an Awarded label like psa did for the Illustrator and they refused.
So I cracked my cgc trophy and sent it to psa I have the label to send to cgc if I ever see them or send into them again. But think the extras water the awarded ones down abit.
They are still very rare regardless and I personally like trying to find one with provenance to the winner.
I also don’t remember the math done but I believe there was a thread somewhere that there is approximately 144 cards per sheet so even if there are only a few copies, there are either extras or they had to have paired it with a different limited promo.
Better way to measure rarity in this context is how often do these items show up. Are you consistently seeing them or if they are available are they only at a very high price that is outside of current market value. Usually those cards are rarer.
Adding onto what others have already said: in some cases, modern trophy extras have been hole-punched. You won’t see this for old-back trophies and not every modern extra has been hole-punched, but if it’s punched you have the guarantee it wasn’t awarded. I’m not confident in saying what year the hole-punching began/ended as I’ve never been overly interested in modern trophies, so someone more knowledgeable than me can comment if they feel obliged – I have only ever seen it for FA Pikas though.
there’s an extra set of the 04 trophies out there where they scratched up the corners really badly to indicate they are the extras
