Uncut Sheet / Test Print: Snap Promos + Tropical Wind and Fan Club promos

I feel like I saw another sheet on akabane’s stories a while back with more snap cards.
I havent seen that posted or shared since

Edit: Nevermind, it is in the post that thundermoo shared above

Honestly, I couldn’t stand that filter effect that was used on those videos  I’m sure it will be posted soon with a CGC grade.

What’s next?

Does this make sense they’d be printed at the same time/way like this?

They are most likely real cards, but printed separately from their intended release. The Fan Gyarados is the biggest piece of evidence, as it never had a release. This is a great example why I always tell people not to marry themselves to release numbers. There are officially awarded copies, and then this stuff.

The Gyarados looks pretty cool in this holofoil type.

Here is a short video:

The fact that these are being shared via an Iphone camera and not with HD scans feels criminal :smiling_face_with_tear:

Still would take this over how some of the old “sample” prints were shared from the e-reader demos and such, haha

CGC actually does cert numbers in batches (so 001, 002, 003, etc.) so we can actual see other uncut sheets from the same batch. So this beauty was also graded.

I’m starting to wish this stuff was never unearthed.

You’re a little late, but welcome to the club, my friend.

I tried doing that yesterday but the certs were showing up as non-existent for me. They work now. I’ll add it to the OP

Front and back of the Fan club sheet:

It really is just printed on a scrap sheet

So these sheets are potentially just some random thing employees made for the hell of it?

Imagine being Akabane back then & having the power to make any kind of card you want? He probably went to town with that printer. Maybe there’s other cards made with the fankarp holo? I wouldn’t be surprised.

It’s always an option. But that’s not what I’m suggesting. You have to keep in mind the context of these sheets. They were just fun little things to give away to some children, you can’t look at them with 2024 price glasses on. It’s not surprising they would just recycle an old sheet because it wasn’t worth it to print on a fresh, blank one

You have a point, but this was 1999. The Japanese market was kinda booming during that time. Ken Goldin was selling Neo promo sets for $999 a piece. They couldn’t have known what they’d be worth today. But they definitely knew each print was worth a good amount even for that time.

Ya the cards were specifically made for just a childrens contest. But they were still worth a lot even for that time & they probably would’ve known of the value to some extent.

This is a fair point. Even 99 trophy pikachus were selling for thousands.

The logic just doesn’t follow. If Akabane was basically prophetic and knew these cards would be 6 figures one day, why does it look like it was printed on scrap and cut by a monkey? Why hold onto it for nearly 24 years before selling it? If it was printed recently, it makes even less sense to print it onto scraps. You could make more if it was in good condition and cleanly cut.

Something like this looks like it was made by some factory worker that was tasked to print a mock-up of the cards so he just grabbed a scrap sheet, cut it down to fit in the test printer. Then the sheet was given to someone Akabane or Akabane-adjacent for review. And finally he brought it home and it just sat in his closet for 24 years and one day casually posted it to instagram.

Of course this is pure speculation. But it’s speculation that makes the least amount of assumptions. A mock-up was made, it was done sloppily and casually, then it just sat in storage for 24 years.
