I doubt this happened, because I just don’t think the EV is positive.
Like, for EX Deoxys, $158,600 puts each pack at ~$4400.
Let’s say you scanned the box, determined there was a gold star Ray in a specific pack. Now you have:
- PSA 9 Ray (you’re not getting a PSA 10 of it in 2026)
- 11 heavy EX Deoxys packs
- 24 light EX Deoxys packs
Looking on eBay, a heavy Deoxys pack is maybe ~$5k and a light pack is maybe ~$2k. IDK what a PSA 9 Ray is off the top of my head, but I’m assuming like $50k? No recent solds on eBay.
If so, that puts the total at $50k + $55k + $48k = $153,000
Which is less than what the box just sold for. And that’s if there’s a gold star Ray. For gold star Latias/Latios, the EV is much worse, obviously.
Hell, maybe I have the values wrong and the EV is actually $200k instead of $153k. Even in that case, the additional effort, risk, and time involved to pull this off would be significant and the gain would still be relatively meager.
If I (1) had a Deoxys box and (2) wanted to sell it, I would just sell the whole thing without bothering.
