Yeah, I’m not a big fan of the first generation of these cards. I think the view from the back of the head is probably supposed to be reminiscent of the actual game (where you have that behind-the-pokemon-perspective on your active pokemon). For the more animated attack cards, it’s fun to see what some of these moves may look like too ![]()
I dont know it counts as a variant, but i noticed one of my pink torchics back photo (top left) is lighter than the other ones. It’s definitely more noticeable in person…
Hard to see in the picture, but that’s a lot of chickens! I think these cards may have a decent range of printing differences. In an earlier post, we briefly covered potential printing differences in the Johto cards. I chalked it up to printing variance rather than deeming it a new variant.
These are incredibly cool looking ones and packed with some of my favourite pokemon, such a great collectable! I wonder if the gen 5 and 6 attacks can be mixed correctly
they also remind me of the Pokemon magic message cards
Y’all are doing great work in this thread. Going to have to start some new binders based on the info included here
This may be off topic but i found an interesting error topsun pikachu 3D card in my collection that i never noticed before.
See if you can spot it:
-all frontside (top 2 unpeeled, bottom 2 peeled)
-top left same, the other 3 now showing backside
Yup - the bottom right one has the peelable sticker as the frontside, and the usual rainbow backside. Pretty interesting!
edit: i think i figured out what happened. The kid who had it originally prob peeled off the backside sticker and stuck it on the front side of the card instead. How funny. That’s something i would do as a kid lol.
if you look closer at the back, there’s an edge where it shows the sticker overlapping. Mystery solved!
Yeah, that’s very likely what happened. You see this with some of the earlier Topsun prism cards/stickers, where they’ve clearly been peeled off at some point and then put back on.
I am collecting the magmar evolution line from these sets. I have magmar vs Mr mime, magmar vs gloom, magby vs sheldon. I cannot find number 240 magby vs oddish located anywhere. Anyone know of a place to find it?
When I was looking for pictures for some of the Johto series, some of the cards seemed a lot harder to find than others (even just pictures). I don’t remember if the Magby one was one of the more difficult ones to find (or ones that I saw less of), but you’ll probably just have to be persistent, and it’ll turn up one day. If you’re used to searching the Japan marketplaces, I would also just use more generic keywords for searching, in case it’s hidden in a bundle where the seller didn’t want to list out all individual cards. Good luck!
Ok i received the 4 mega clear vs cards from japan. Possibly the best day of my life haha. I explained to the seller about my ongoing research to make a complete set list for these, and this is what he said in response:
"I am not sure if this information will be helpful, but the “Battle Gum” series, which were candy prizes from Top Seika, were sold while repeatedly undergoing renewals over many years in alignment with the history of the Pokemon anime, spanning “Diamond & Pearl (DP),” “Best Wishes (BW),” and “XY.”
The composition of the sets released around 2015 (the XY series period), which you inquired about, is as follows:
Basic composition per series (per pack): 22 to 24 types in total.
In most cases, the lineup consisted of 22 or 24 types in total.
Since they are designed to form a battle as a pair of two, it is standard for them to be prepared in even numbers (equivalent to 11 to 12 pairs).
Main content included at the time in 2015 (XY / Mega Evolution period):
Since 2015 was the peak period for “Pokemon XY” and “XY&Z,” the lineup mainly centered around “Mega Evolved Pokemon” and “Legendary Pokemon.”
Mega Evolved Pokemon: Mega Charizard (X/Y), Mega Scizor, Mega Sableye, etc.
Legendary / Mythical Pokemon: Kyogre, Groudon, Xerneas, Yveltal, etc.
This is all the information I was able to find.
Please let me know if there is anything else."
ok i came up with likely a complete set list for BW clear vs cards (27attackers/24defenders - which tracks what the japanese seller told me of 22-24 range), and an almost complete one for XY (22 attackers/26defenders) (note* - i kept having to edit these numbers bc i kept finding more!). these are very rare so it took me 1-2 months scrolling through ebay and mercari jp obsessively (plus actively collecting them the last 3-4 years) to get even this close.
i started with the weebly website, then supplemented that list with my own collection and ebay/mercari jp postings.
fyi i numbered them to keep track myself so the numbers assigned below are not official - these cards don’t come with numbers.
*Edit-split out BW & XY VS series into separate links b/c it got too big for one post.
BW VS SERIES SET LIST & PHOTOS (27 attackers/24 defenders)
XY VS SERIES SET LIST & PHOTOS (22 attackers/26 defenders)
Very cool to hear that info from a seller in Japan! It’s also great to have your set list information at least logged in the thread. Since Top Seika was not very good with having checklists or set lists, this piecing together through collectors and available listings is probably the best we can do ![]()
When I get to the BW and XY sets (someday…), with your permission, I’ll add your lists to the main post and credit you. Let me know if you have any issues with that! Thanks for your help curating ![]()
Oh haha the only reason i made that list is to help you with your post. So yes, lets do this!
I also came across the same jp yahoo auctions listing of the complete advanced generation pink border cards. i feel like bc its extremely rare to come across complete sets (with both groudons, all 4 castforms, all 3 deoxys, plus 16 early back variances, etc), its worth posting the pictures so they can be seen in their full glory
