Let’s put it like this Pokemon Company is the highest grossing media franchise in the world. To put it in perspective for those who don’t care for Pokemon I tell them it’s worth more than Star Wars and Harry Potter combined. Usually after that comment there is a nod of respect. Pokemon Company will likely be around for ages and there is no reason to believe it will not continue to dominate the media market. In short, Pokemon is safe in my book
Pokemon is a card game that happens to also be a collectible. They won’t be able to keep selling cards just based on that they look pretty and have nice designs of (insert favourite Pokemon) on it. If the TCG isn’t going to change it’s mechanics and add new archetypes the game will get stale.
The game is now; if you don’t have GX/VMax on table on your second turn with the correct support bench; you lose. There is no hand destruction (we need a functional reprint of Lass!), there is no opponent mill, there is no bench manipulation.
I understand, the game shouldn’t be to hard for younger players. But Pokemon had the advantage that their tournaments are divided into age groups. A 8 year old with a beatdown deck will never meet a 25 year old with a streamlined hand destruction and mill deck and lose by turn 3 due not having cards in hand and his only remaining active Pokemon is a 30hp Magikarp. I think the reason why in the Master Division of Pokemon you don’t see any one really above 25 is because they figured out that bottom line the winner of each match is the one with the best draw, not the best deck or best counters.
They need to attract new blood into the franchise (fancy cards, fun games, nice plushes) and keep the old ones interested (good mechanics, deep gameplay, fancy graphics) while also keep the high end collectors (print just enough Zards a year to make them hunt down in a print-to-demand set). It’s a hard thing to balance, but they have to fix it sooner.
I guess you’ve never heard of confirmation bias? Sometimes, for some people who should be considered intelligent, y’all need a lot spelled out for you.
It’s not really that we need things spelled out, it’s that there’s a bunch of people here that take shots without any talking points of their own. They think that discounting an argument is winning the argument and make many of us jump through hoops. It’s why you’ll see defensive stances to vauge comments because most of us are tired of the bs posters that think they’re inteligent but have nothing to offer in terms of opinions.
If you want to say there’s bias here that’s fine, you’re probably right. But what’s the point of saying it? do you think someone’s right or wrong?
I feel very positive about the future of Pokemon. There seems to be enough genuine interest to keep the hobby going. Even if it loses popularity for some reason, I will continue to collect.
I added my personal opinion to the latter half of the post. But come on, not a single post in this thread is saying that Pokemon is going to die and their cards will become worthless.
My comment had more to do with the incredulous ignorance of the OP while asking the question without taking into account where they are. Similar to a group of republicans being asked what they think of the newest thing the president has said in the US. Why ask the question if you know you’re going to get bias answers? You already know the answer you’re going to get. It sounded to me like he was just looking for further affirmation that he made a smart decision to buy into the hobby.
Yeah i mean, you’ve got a point. But take into account a lot of people post that kind of redundant questions and the same topics over and over again here. There’s always new people coming in who got no idea about some stuff and they got doubts so they ask, i think it’s obvious you will get biased answers in a forum about pokemon collection but i think people just want confirmation of something they already suspect.
I went back. You did post your opinion, that’s fair. I think experts are the best to go to for opinions, don’t you think? If I went to a doctor and asked if my mole is cancerous I hope they all would have similar answers. So while I do understand your point about bias and it should be accounted for, I’m glad I ignored the non biased people that told me I couldn’t make money off of Pokémon cards and I should spend my time/money elsewhere.
Perhaps playing devils advocate would be More productive. What would it take for Pokémon to become worthless?
Perhaps. But, this place isn’t somewhere to go to assuage your fears of your investments or collecting. If you need other’s opinions to jump in, chances are, you shouldn’t be doing it. If you got weak hands, you’re set up to fail from the outset. Hence the contradictory nature of it all.
And lol. Everyone that I initially told about long term investing into Pokemon cards told me I was dumb and that I should have sold my first ed base set sealed boosters for $400 when I bought them for $200 in 2013 because “it’s at its peak”. I still give them the price updates. I get that feeling.
Yeah, could’ve been a better phrased question I suppose. I appreciate the feedback cullers.
However, in regards to “incredulous ignorance of the OP”, this seems a bit unnecessary… That being said, Zorkzork69, I agree with your original post about it being likely people here will agree that Pokemon will survive. Deep down though, everyone has those tiny reservations. I do. As much as I fight and argue that Pokemon will survive, I always have that doubt. That is where risk comes into the purchases we all make. That is also what I was hoping to dredge up. It’s only natural that this will be a continuous topic appearing on the forum. It’s a massive question that warrants consideration periodically. Something to get us to each review what it is we actually believe.
I love this example. I always use Johan Cruijff for similar examples being a Dutch native and needing a football reference. In sports it’s very common you give a player a godlike status, but when you compare it to anything modern they fall short of even the most mediocre player. And it’s funny to see, if you track some PWCC auctions, some people really trying to make Messi and Christiano Ronaldo happen in the world of sport collecting yet… their “rookie” cards are super stable between $200-350 for like last 5 years. And while Ronaldo (90’s Brazillian Ronaldo, not CR7) was also dubbed a football god, man that changed football, his status doesn’t reflect in collecting.
Nostalgia will drive the collecting hobby. But Pokémon is far more than just a few thousand men and women collecting printed cardboard pieces. Without good games, good movies, good tv shows nothing will become nostalgic in the future for a new generation. Pokémon will never have his Gretsky (or Messi/Ronaldo) but will always have his Ruth (Cruijff). We idolise Base Charizard and ‘obsurce’ things like Family Khan. But my nephews are okay with any foil card they pull, never build a connection with it because besides watching Pokémon on TV there is so, so much more. Sometimes in way higher production value. Same for the games, while they never ever played Fortnite, they know all the dances, but can’t name more than Ash’s team.
As long as Nintendo doesn’t revamp their games (video and the trading card game) the new generation will just see Pokemon as ‘just another thing’ and not a media icon as for us '70/'80/'90’s kids.
My five year old daughter came into my room today with her dedenne promo I gave her a year ago. She has it in a special Pokémon box. She wouldn’t stop talking about it. My nieces and nephews ask me about my collection and my favorite Pokémon games all of them time. Pokemon seems to be doing just fine to me.
Tbh if anything was to hit the pokemon franchise it would be a serious issue from outside the hobby that forces people to prioritise necessities over luxuries.
I dont see much weakness specifically with the hobby itself though. Pokemon is going strong as an influencer to all ages even now and it doesnt look like it will slow down. That said i do think we will experience a major event outside of the hobby that hurts luxury spending, but that’s a personal opinion. The after effects of current events could be that catalyst.
