There is something weird going on with Portuguese Jungle 1st Ed

I don’t have much to add, but apart from Portuguese 1st edition Jungle; Dutch unlimited edition Fossil; and Spanish 1st edition Neo Genesis, I hadn’t seen Korean unlimited edition Base Set being mentioned yet as a crazy rare set. I know multiple species collectors whom are missing a single Korean Base Set card to complete their collections across all languages/variations.

The Portuguese 1st edition Jungle Pikachu was also the last Portuguese Pikachu I needed to complete all 75 Portuguese Pikachu TCG cards at the time, and the only card my Brazilian middleman was unable to find.
I ended up buying three Portuguese 1st edition booster packs from eBay, which fortunately contained two of the Pikachu (and a holo Jolteon). This was back in July 2017 (I showed a picture of the Jolteon here), so prices were a lot different than the 800-1000 USD each mentioned above (I got curious and looked back, and apparently I’ve paid 62 euros for the three packs combined - dang I miss my early collecting days sometimes, haha  )..

The packs and booster box clearly state they are made in USA. I think that story may be about a different set. “fabricado na EUA” translates to made in USA.

If the story is accurate, then maybe it explains why these packs had to be made in USA. I have never found a reason why French, German, Italian, and Portuguese had USA Base packs made with 1999-2000 copyrights on the packaging. They look the same as the Jungle packs.

So what I’m learning from this thread is that finding a PSA 9 1st Ed Flareon in Portuguese is functionally impossible?

All of a sudden this pop report makes a lot more sense:

We need to find somebody that can test the cards. I’m not completely convinced that they would’ve been produced in the USA.

Just find the one graded 10, and crack it and resubmit until you get a 9

They were probably printed in the USA then sent to Belgium for distribution.

Good chance they came from UK. They use the same card stock as belgium with the same ink as UK iirc

The cardstock is very common in UK, prob 1/3 or more of whats out there by my estimate

If it’s the stock, I’m thinking of. I’d really like to know what they look like.

One other residual manufacturing artifact from some of the booster packs is an oversized black border on fonts. This is most notably seen on the TM on the front. For the Made in USA Base Portuguese and Italian packs I have seen the same defect. It makes the TM appear black, but it is really an inset border on top of printed white text.

Look at the TM on the left two packs versus the right. It likely pinpoints an extremely narrow window of printing these very rare sets. My best guess is only a few cases were ever made, maybe to comply to distribution contracts in early 2000’s when more modern sets were simultaneously being released.

thanks everyone for sharing all this info… I think is fair to say that something weird with distribution happened. I dont think it was ever released in Portugal or Brazil. But I guesse we would never know for sure. I just never met a collector that remember 1st ed jungle… but they for sure remember unlimited

I’m currently on the hunt for a 1st edition Portuguese Flareon holo. It’s super hard to find unfortunately. My goal is to have every Jungle Flareon holo , every language, every edition.

The last 2 I need is:

Portuguese 1st edition Flareon Holo 3/64
French 1st edition Pyroli Holo 3/64

Why is french hard to find)

I have a portuguese one, cgc 10, paid 750 usd.

On top of being rare, PSA only started grading other languages in Jungle a few years ago. Before that, all I remember them grading was English and Japanese; maybe Spanish? CGC was the first to start grading them back in 2020/21.
