There is something weird going on with Portuguese Jungle 1st Ed

Hi everyone!

I’ve been reading this forum anonymously for years, but I finally had to ask about something that’s been bothering me as a Portuguese Pokémon collector.

Does anyone know why the Portuguese Jungle 1st Edition cards are basically impossible to find?

Some holos I’ve only ever seen in photos, and some I’ve never seen at all… vaporeon for example.

I know some might say foreign language cards are rarer, but this feels different… it’s not just rarity, it’s like a mission impossible. Has anyone actually managed to get any of these Portuguese Jungle 1st ed holos?

I also know many people wonder about the rarest cards from the WOTC era, but at a set level, I don’t think there’s anything quite like this… unless I’m missing something really strange!!

This problem isn’t specific to Portuguese. Some languages are incredibly hard to find, my guess is that they were printed less and on top of that very few people had a desire to keep them.

There was a recent post about Dutch Unlimited Fossil where people are experiencing the same thing. Even across all of the people that have interacted with that post, there are still cards that nobody has images of. It’s hard to find cards for sale when the largest collectors in the hobby don’t even have copies or photographic proof that they exist

There’s a first edition Portuguese Clefable in PSA8 available on cardmarket now. 499 euro.

Portuguese in general is always really really hard to access outside of Brazil. Have you taken a look around Ligapokemon? Its like Card Market but Brazil only

I understand what you mean but I actually think maybe the same situation. Speculation around some collectors is that they did a small print of 1st ed jungle pt but the demand was so insane, that they did not even sent the cards the Portugal/ Brasil. Rumour (just a rumour) they got sold at walmart a very small amount of small boxes. The company went direct to unlimited. People that played around those years in Portugal or Brasil remember 1st ed base and fossil 1st ed but they dont remember seeing jungle for sale.

Maybe with dutch was something similar… maybe the demand was so good the kept priting 1st. I have no idea. But 1st ed sets in wotc jungle pt is the craziest.

Portuguese vintage cards are difficult even in brazil, but there jungle is something that people dont even know it was a thing.

Yes, Portuguese Jungle 1st edition specifically is difficult to find. While it’s true that Portuguese cards in general can be hard to find, the Jungle 1ed set in particular is elusive

Here’s a message from @SableyeStyle on the subject when I asked about difficult Portuguese sets, he may have more info

I see several packs for sale, you just have to pay $800-1,000.

From the packs I see, they are very likely made in USA only. Maybe right when they were printing the USA Base Portuguese.

Any idea what printing they are? I know you said you opened a one. Curious about jungle two.

iirc, 1st edition portuguese jungle cards were printed in belgium, and due to a factory/warehouse problem/issue, 90% or so of the stock was destroyed and never sent to brazil.
Theyre up there with 1st edition neo genesis spanish and unlimited dutch fossil as one of the rarest sets in existence

Well if anyone has an extra, id love to have one for the record books

how did you knew this? ty

I know someone who has been actively chasing the snorlax cards from that set and has dome some crazy research on it.
I may have some minor details wrong, but i know it involves belgium, and stock destruction

ty, I also know some collectors and the theory I was told is different. Is that the production was stopped because pokemon was exploding in Portugal/ Brazil and they went right away for the unlimited. They sold the 1st edition stock in America (walmart)

Its always fun to work out why things happened.
Like the unlimited fossil packs in dutch, ive heard booster boxes were never printed, and the packs were distributed by a limited magazine run.
Wcp unlimited packs being only available for 1day with one of the locations being closed due to a bomb threat or the similar.
1st spanish neo genesis i havent heard why tho
