The Psychology of Collection: An Upcoming Analysis

Salutations all, after months of enduring life without a laptop I’m finally back online and eager to make myself more acquainted with this community which I was unable to do last time around.

I’m a psychologist by trade after graduating 2 years ago from university and now that I have a new laptop I’m itching to get back into academic essay writing.

I’ve only been a part of this community for a short while; but I’ve been an enthusiastic Pokemon collector for well over a decade now; in addition to earlier interests in collecting coins and stamps, suffice to say collecting is a big part of my personality and life.

So in that regard, a topic I’ve been eager to study for quite a while now is the psychology of collecting and in particular in relation to Pokemon and how the people and community involved compare to other collection based hobbyists.
I think it would be fascinating to gain this insight and learn exactly how our mutual interests may influence our behaviour and personality in significant ways, how we compare to other collectors, the inherent symbolism of collecting and what it represents to us in our day to day lives. It would also be interesting to look at the difference between individual collectors within the hobby; those who collect for nostalgia, for financial reasons and what-have-you. Furthermore I think it is important to look at the negatives as well, to help identify when collecting becomes more than just collecting and how to identify the trappings of such behaviour before it becomes an issue.

This is really just fun for me, I’m passionate about essay writing and conducting studies, I don’t stand to gain anything from it apart from sharing the knowledge with the community, it won’t be represented or backed by any organisation or interest group, it will solely be posted here and in my personal blog.

I’m going to be conducting a huge literature review and think about the structure of how it will be discussed and explained in the essay.
I need to think of a wide variety of applicable topics of interest, I am totally open to ideas, if there is anything you’d be interested in reading about that you’ve wanted to know more about then please post a comment (I’ll respond to everything posted!) and if you’d like to help me collect some data by completing any surveys I make or questions I put forward so we can tally the results and learn more about it then that’d be grand too!

Being fairly new I’m unsure if such a thing has been conducted before here or if it is even something that any of you would be interested in?
Either way, please let me know what you think!

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has welcomed me into this community thus far, possibly the warmest reception ever so thanks again for that.
