Hoping for SV1a Magikarp
I’ll be updating the excel sheet with every card by the end of day tomorrow at the latest. Will try to get to it tonight, but may not be able to.
Nows the time to invest! Simple 1 year miscalculation
Sorry for the wait! This is going to be a long write up so get comfortable.
For the first time since the contest began, we are positive! Our total Q3 Price clocks in at $18,686.42 compared to the total Q2 Price of $18,668.64 for an increase of $17.78 or 0.10%. I think we can now all claim to be geniuses in the high-class world of Pokemon Investing.
Anyway, there were a lot more cards that increased this quarter than previous ones.
36 of 64 cards increased in price.
25 of 64 cards have decreased in price.
3 of 64 cards have not changed in price (No new data in sales).
Our third worst performing card of the quarter was the Japanese Ash’s Greninja EX 218/XY-P PSA 10 World Hobby Fair Promo. This card has been a regular here in the worst performances and has had 4 consecutive losses. Previously $130.68 to $96.28 for a loss of $34.40 or 26.32%.
Next, the second worst performance of the quarter belongs to Japanese Dedenne 012/032 PSA 10 from the Pokekyun Collection. This card has also had 4 consecutive losses and was the biggest loser of Q4, which was the first quarter we started tracking. Its Q2 Price was $47.20 and it fell to $27.50 for a loss of $19.70 or 41.74%.
Lastly, the card with the worst performance of the quarter is English Guzzlord GX SV71/SV94 CGC 10 from Hidden Fates. There were only two sales for the card in the previous quarter. One around $10.00 and the other at $18.00. Previously $31.90 to $14.00 for a loss of $17.90 or 56.11%.
Now onto the third best performance of the quarter, Japanese Eevee 062/SV-P PSA 10 Yu Nagaba Promo. A bit surprising when I saw this one had increased so much as the changes from previous quarters were quite small. Previously $42.27 to $52.91 for an increase of $10.64 or 25.17%.
Next, the second best performance of the quarter belongs to Japanese Karen’s Tyranitar 090/141 PSA 10 from VS Set. Nice to see the only VS card that was chosen in the best performing this quarter as I am a huge fan so it supports my confirmation bias. Previously $178.50 to $226.00 for an increase of $47.50 or 26.61%.
Lastly, our best performer of the quarter was the Japanese Rescue Team DX’s Pikachu 036/S-P PSA 10 Promo. This card had losses in all other tracked quarters, but ended up with an overall gain due to this final quarter. Its Q2 Price was $109.85 and it increased to $140.70 for a gain of $30.85 or 28.08%.
Now onto the final results!
Over the course of one year, we lost a decent chunk of change. We started with a purchase price of $22,122.40 and turned it into $18,686.42 for a total loss of $3,435.98 or 15.53%. And that’s before paying any fees from selling.
18 of 64 cards increased in price with an average increase of 16.80%
46 of 64 cards decreased in price with an average decrease of 28.97%
I omitted Japanese Flower Shop Lady 074/080 PSA 10 from HGSS Reviving Legends from the finals because it only sold once in the whole year for $26.00 and had a “Purchase Price” of $79.10. Total loss of $53.10 or 67.13%
The third worst overall performance belongs to Chinese Lillie 005/005 PSA 9 from the Lillie Gift Box. This card started out with a “Purchased Price” of $166.83 and fell to $61.00 for a total loss of $105.83 or 63.44%. And that is with a small increase in price from the last tracked quarter.
Next, the second worst overall performance comes from the Japanese Ash’s Greninja EX 218/XY-P PSA 10 World Hobby Fair Promo. This card continued its deep descent from the second tracked quarter after an abundance of them came to market. It’s “Purchased Price” was $369.64 and declined to $96.28 for a loss of $273.36 or 73.95%
Lastly, our top worst overall performance. Japanese Dedenne 012/032 PSA 10 from the Pokekyun Collection. Steady losses for this card throughout the year just like Greninja. The “Purchased Price” was $107.08 and it has fallen to $27.50 for a loss of $79.58 or 74.32%. Congrats.
Now for our third best overall performance of the year. English Charizard 103/100 PSA 9 from Diamond and Pearl Stormfront. This card had one quarter of slight loss, but it’s hefty increase in the second tracked quarter secured its position. From a “Purchased Price” of $673.92 to $862.33 for a total increase of $188.41 or 27.96%.
Next, our second best overall performance belongs to English Umbreon V 189/203 PSA 10 from Evolving Skies. The demand for modern is something else. This card had a “Purchase Price” of $194.80 and increased to $262.64 for a total increase of $67.84 or 34.83%. One notable mention is that this card was one of the few that had zero likes on 10/1/2023.
And finally, our best overall performance simply ran away with it. It had the largest percentage change in price of any card that we tracked. English Clefairy 5/102 PSA 7 from Base Set. The “Purchase Price” was $20.48 and it has increased to $36.25 for a total gain of $15.77 or 77.00%. The true mascot of Pokemon will soon rise again.
Had a super fun time with this write up and tracking the cards each quarter. Thank you to everyone for your suggestions and following along. Til next time.
Huge thanks to @A.P.Speeze for putting in so much effort!
Thanks for compiling all of the data and your analysis. Very interesting read.
Cheers!
MVP! (and you Dyl obv )
I think this exercise was a lot of fun and provided some great insight on short-term trends and how speculative investing can be! Thank you @Dyl and @A.P.Speeze for running the show!
Thanks for tracking all the cards in the que! This was fun to look at and watch unfold.
Watching the 218/XY-P fall that much over the past year has been pretty crazy. So glad that I graded my own copy I got for about $10 a few years ago. The pop for the card has gone up dramatically since I graded mine, so I think that has a good amount to do with the decrease in price.
When I graded mine, it was about 30 10s I believe. Right now, there are 399 10s according to the population report.
