Depending on how my sub goes and how the labels look in person I may upgrade mine. You only need to send about 100 cards to make it worth it I think

It’s been awhile since I sent cards to PSA for grading. Are there still PSA specials at the end of summer / back to school collectors specials for Pokemon cards? I’m considering holding off sending cards for better deals. Are others holding off on grading cards like before?
I’m talking about $5-7 grading fees, they are already been brutal making these graders work for $10 profits 90% of the time at best, with occasional psa 10 $100 card for those nagaba graders. With the slowdown people willing to send cards to grade, they are not helping true collectors encapsulate bulk or small shops that rely on the grading fees deals that allow their shops to prosper, a lot of people are already moving over to the crappy cgc since prices are better? fake10cgcmint is the new meta? C’mon PSA, suppose to be the standard for luxury cards and bgs ofc.
I imagine grading companies have had a slowdown of submissions, are people sending in cards as much as they used to? Seems cheaper to buy graded cards, considering the turnaround times and workload you are left with after grades come back.
Last send off was decent am going for atleast a 30 card send off this time, fingers crossed for my next returns.

The card shown was a 4xxxxxxx cert psa 9 masaki gengar.
Owners of psa10/9 masaki sets also commented on linked thread that some of their masaki cards have the marks too.

So I guess it’s not uncommon for higher grade masakis to have these marks.
Maybe PSA f***ed up, but this happened too many times to be considered misgrades, unless PSA is really inconsistent in grading masakis.

Masaki mark, smpratte has spoken about this on youtube amongst other creators. From the packaging used for the cards and very common known issue.

This was my thread, can’t believe its been 3 years since I posted that lol. In the end the seller had a free 30 day return policy, so I accepted it based on the feedback I received back then.
Currently I own a different 9 Masaki Gengar with newer cert than this one I showed and there are no Maskai Marks that I can see on the card.
Either way I do believe that these are the likely scenarios on why these card grade 9 with the Maskai marks,
- They are missed
- They are graded less harshly due to its release and history
- Most of these cards that were graded were a long time ago and PSA probably didn’t think to observe so closely at those specific coroners and now they know to look there. I’m going to presume that the newer graded Maskai cards could possibly still have these marks in higher grades, but just not as prominent (showing marks on both front and back of the card) as the older ones.

PSA probably missed the marks out for higher grades with the masaki marks in my opinion, or the grader don’t know what he/she is looking at. With all this being said, a 9 is still a 9.
Everyone seems to forget that a grader is looking at a card for less than a minute each. It is an easy thing to miss if you don’t know to look for it. There is also a wide range of experience at PSA
Many have slipped through. I’ve seen a couple of 10 gengar that have it. One of my masaki 9s have it like I said in the older thread. It’s just one of those things that will always slip through unless intentional guards are put in place during the grading process specifically for these cards. I just doubt that’s happening

Such a shame though given the insane premium on the psa 10s, especially gengar.

Doesn’t PSA use AI-assisted grading now? Granted a machine learning model is only as good as the data, parameters, and features selected for training and validation. But if their AI is trained to recognize such marks or something similar maybe less will slip through. Of course, if high grades with the marks were used during training then the AI will be useless. The last time I read about it, the AI is supposed to be sophisticated enough to detect nearly 100 unique surface anomalies and be able to detect fake cards and resubmit cards.
Go listen to Poke knowledge’s interview with Nat Turner. If I remember correctly, Nat says they only use AI for measuring centering and have no plan to fully remove the human element of grading at PSA.

Actually going to send my Lugia in again for another relabel. Never noticed this before but the pristine labels they printed at national and cc these awful perforated edges with whitening. The ones they do in Florida are the perfectly cut edge labels. Really weird choice but I’m assuming it’s related to some technical thing with the traveling equipment.
