through what marketplace, eBay? Surely YJ or Mercari sellers aren’t doing this right??

You say that but for a long time the corrected non glossy japanese ivy pika was the more expensive one..
Although eye appeal should be the primary factor in non historical pieces such as this

I have found several more mislabeled 1998 corrected and been sharing with @Quuador it truly is a sad state of affairs.

Will PSA payout when a card is mislabeled like this?
In their updated policy, the grade guarantee would not apply.

From personal experience, they do not pay for their own mistake mislabels.
I have found several of these corocoro mislabels being auctioned from PSA Vault, Fanatics, ryanscardhouse and a random seller or two but should know better. I have messaged each, explaining why the card(s) are mislabeled and it is unfair to the buyer and please look into it or pull auction/sale. Not just the 98 corrected but the glossy jiggly and non glossy Pika labeled glossy as well.
To date not 1 solitary action, each and every card has sold. PSA Vault replied to my very first message and said they would look into it. From there I pointed out others, no reply after that, all allowed to trade.
Bottom line there are many things impacted here from the obvious buyer issues with no recourse(?) to pop reports being artificially high even when low pop lol
Ironically it seems to be a major issue with these specific cards, while an issue may exist with say lily pad mew glossy vs JR I have not seen one mistake yet or many of the others.
Just a quick thing. I looked back at my first contact with PSA Vault and got a reply when I asked what the policy is if I buy this card and it turns out the card is not glossy and thus mislabeled and wrongly categorized. Their reply was essentially we can deal with that if that is the case. I replied what does that mean, a refund? And that is where I never heard back again lol

Little up date, @ryans_cardhouse on ebay has listened and removed a mislabeled CGC 7.5 98 corrected glossy and thanked me. So some progress being made. Thank you ryans_cardhouse for listening.

Pros: A PSA 10 unlimited Mirror L2 Houndoom was finally graded and is up for sale
Cons: It’s actually a 1st edition copy
hopefully its an honest mistake from the seller but I fear in this day and age its more likely that someone deliberately pulled a fast one over on the R&ID department and is now trying to scam a buyer by auctioning it. It’s such a shame whenever the first in a pop report is actually just a PSA employee mistake. Oh well

In this stage of the market, I’ve been thinking a lot about what could be considered undervalued in the future (longterm). Japanese cards have come a looooong way in the past 10 years. Even a few years ago though, a lot of japanese exclusives/promos (vs series. vending, etc.) weren’t especially known to the average collector and weren’t terribly valuable. (Obviously people on this site knew, but this is a different breed of collector here!)
Exclusive art is the biggest thing that draws casual collectors to japanese cards, and a few years ago that is what drew me to explore this side of the hobby. I believe this rabbit hole is one many people gradually go down the longer they stay interested.
Now, this is all rehashing what has already happened. Looking towards the future, I settled on one area that isn’t well understood by more than a small percentage of people, and one I only recently (past few months) have come to know.
Japanese unlimited (specifically e reader E2-E5). As most of you are aware, the pop reports of these cards are roughly 25-50% of what the 1st editions are.
I’m not going to go into E1 because it is its own thing. But I did an exhaustive search of all the holo cards from E2-E5 and found a few things.
- For some of the very famous cards, there already is a significant premium on unlimited, which shows that some big collectors spending 5 figures already understand this.
- For 70% of these cards, there are practically no listings, so you have to look at spotty sales data which can be inconclusive
- The sales data is a mess, with 1st edition cards being wrongfully included in sales and vice versa, psa labels themselves being mislabeled, and a general lack of information.
- When I do find listings for these cards, they are sometimes at the same price, or sometimes lower (!!!) than the 1st editions. Now, I do think this is shifting, but they can still be found.
Now, a couple of footnotes. Do I ever expect japanese unlimited to command the same premium that english 1st edition holds over unlimited? No, because shiny stamp is cool, and many people will prioritize the stamp over the (lack) of scarcity it actually represents.
Also, the lack of exclusive artwork will always hinder these cards compared to their English counterparts. That is a simple fact that is true of (most) any set with matching english/japanese art. (Although, the exclusive holo pattern of the japanese crystals is one thing I think about!)
Finally, we are in a bull market-we could hit a bear market in the near future and everything could go down in value! I really am thinking longer term when it comes to these cards.
I don’t write this to try and convince other people to “pump my cards.” I’ve been a reader of this site for a few years and only recently decided to create an account because this site is the best I can find online as far as knowledge and type of collector. I’m a long term collector who has only picked up a few of these in the past month or so (psa 9 crystal nidoking, psa 10 poliwrath, psa 9 rhydon). I am just excited to talk about these cards with other people. I’ve seen them talked about before on here, so please don’t think I’m trying to “man-splain” to anyone. Shout-out to all those people, those posts are what led me here!
Basically, all I’m saying is, if I see jpnanese unlimited for the same price as 1st edition, I’m going to bookmark it, and consider adding to my collection. Once you start to appreciate that blank space where the 1st edition stamp should be, it can be really addicting!

I’d report that to PSA, they could look into it and take the cert number down to be corrected.
Do you have any info on how to do this? I tried going through some form on the site but it seemed like it was just redirecting me to a CRC form, as if I were the owner of the card
Ah I wouldn’t know the best place to go. Hopefully you find a way to get an email from a human asking for info then you can spill the beans

I found a generic set registry ‘issue with this certification’ option. Hopefully that goes to a real human and we can have some L2 related justice

I’ve noticed several first editions mislabeled as unlimited lately. The first edition stamps are so small I could see how it’d be easy to miss.
