Well the reality is they aren’t lying that these are the first cards for the TCG which is a unique data point for them and they are just bringing a lot of attention to said fact.
Buying a bunch of cards you know you are going to do heavy advertising around isn’t exactly unethical, but it does bring to question if the drive to talk and make a documentary around it is organic interest or pumping your “bags”.
I think people don’t like stuff like that because the resulting interest doesn’t feel organic. Ultimately a “this feels like slimey business tactics”, rather than substantial harm being done.

Even with recent price increases I still consider the 1996 Glossy Pikachu Ken Sugimori error to be the most undervalued card in the entire hobby.
- First ever Pokemon trading card. I do not consider the Jigglypuff to be included alongside it since the 1998 reprint is indistinguishable from the original 1996 version.
- Lack of mainstream awareness. Growth up until this point has been organic driven by collectors. It has yet to be featured prominently in the mainstream media. Should a future Pokemon museum / exhibit exist similar to that of vintage baseball cards I believe it would be a centrepiece given the history.
- Population and Condition Rarity. The current population of 900 is still small. If the population doubles over time it is still comparable to the population of a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle along with having centering and condition issues.

I’d be surprised if graded supply jumps a bunch for these hard to find vintage Japanese sets. Even raw packs will be disappearing eventually. I think $8,500 seems like a very solid price for a PSA 10 Neo 4. Booster boxes barely exist for some of these sets, and PSA 10 graded packs can be the next closest thing (if people care about the 10 grade for packs as much as they do for cards).
These won’t pop up much at all, especially the super hard to find e-series sets

I agree that the very first TCG Pikachu ever released has been undervalued for the longest time, and I also think it is great if more people start to educate themselves on the historic significance on some of these early releases. However, I do think 4680 USD for a PSA 4 is too steep for this card. Even at 400ish USD a few weeks ago seemed too steep. It is not a rare card in poor condition. The buyers at these prices are most likely new collectors that have not yet learned the relative scarcity of these old cards.

Yeah this one surprised me too. There is like a bazilion sealed copies still out there. Of all the PPP/PLAY promos, this one and the gen4 starters you would see the most. Heck I own two sealed copies of this card by happenstance, purchased as part of a lot. Was never really worth grading in the past (which is why it has the lowest pop of all the PPPs), so I assume some people are going to get burned by this one.
