I think the 1996 CoroCoro Comic Jigglypuff promo will climb in value because of this. What other Jigglypuff cards might too?

I love that card, but idk how a promo for a commercial with Jigglypuff would necessarily translate to interest in the ‘96 Coro

He’s just here to shill the cards

unfortunately that’s the reality for most people who joined the forum in the last year or so

You don’t think Jigglypuff possibly on the big screen for one of the biggest games in the US would stir up interest for Jigglypuff cards? It wouldn’t necessarily translate to more interest in '96 CCC Jigglypuff but it could. In my opinion, Jigglypuff doesn’t have that many good cards in general, and with this card being one of the two first cards turning 30 later this year, there’s potential. And there’s nothing wrong with being hype or excited for that.

You must never have been excited for something.

That’s not how it works really. It’s not like the pokemon who showed up in Detective Pikachu increased in price after the movie came out. There’s a missing causal link.

yeah but the thing is, you didn’t say “I’m so excited for an iconic card with such historical significance to the Pokemon TCG to get more recognition and appreciation” - you said “I think the 1996 CoroCoro Comic Jigglypuff promo will climb in value

You’re talking about a Japanese card in context of western audiences. That crossover is already relatively niche, and then you’re assuming people will correlate its appearance in this video with that specific card.

People have to be aware of the card already or do research to find the card. The first is unlikely for 99% of western Pokemon fans, and the second is also just as unlikely in my opinion. If any Jigglypuff were to go up, it’d be a WOTC print. With that said, they won’t.

Jigglypuff is in Smash, Detective Pikachu, had an iconic role in the anime, etc. And, still, Jiggly’s popularity is dwarfed by many others with less exposure.

That said, I’m buying up 1996 CoroCoro Jigglypuffs like no other. Who’s with me?

I’d like to have one some day, if only to honour Keiji Kinebuchi and all he accomplished for the very things we gather to speak about here. I’m sure it could and would have been all so very different. My thoughts only, always, not a moral grandstand.

This is very likely old news to a lot of people here but I did not have time to follow the market very closely in the recent months so I was kind of surprised by some of the card prices. Since I am currently recovering from an injury I had some spare time and went through my collection and cards that I am still missing, in particular VS Series.

I know that some cards went up like crazy (e.g. Gengar or cards by Komiya) but I did not know that almost every single card is now almost double or triple the price it was a year ago. And I am not only talking about chases or super popular Pokemon but also, at least to me, seemingly random cards.

Two examples:
Mistys Quagsire in EX condition was about 10 EUR about a year ago. Now the cheapest listings in this condition are almost 50 EUR and it is selling for 35-60 EUR.

Brunos Ursaring was a 5 EUR card in EX/NM condtion last year, now the cheapest listings start at 25 EUR and last solds are also between 20 and 30 EUR.

And obviously the Holos and popular Pokémon are even more expensive (in absolute numbers).

May not be surprising to a lot of people here but I was pretty surprised that even cheaper, non-chase cards went up like that.

100%.

I’ve noticed that too. Frankly, it seems pretty dumb to me especially considering that they are non-holo, readily available set cards. I still find plenty of CGC/PSA9 for less than 50$, so I really don’t get why someone would want to spend this much for a played copy.

It feels like people are trying to take advantage of anything remotely stonkable, maybe thinking that these have some kind of untapped potential due to be owner’s pokemon, Japanese exclusive or whatever.
We’ll see, but personally I decided to be patient ‘cause no way I’m gonna pay ketamine’s Quagsire 50 eur.

I totally agree with your statement, some things really just don’t make sense to me.

Luckily I bought most of my VS cards from 2022-24 and I am just missing a handful. But basically all of those exploded like crazy. Bugsys Scizor for example, was available for around 40-50 EUR in GD/EX condition not too long ago. Now there is one listing in GD condition on cardmarket for 150 EUR (and some for around 165 EUR on ebay from Japan in LP condition) while the NM ones start at 250 EUR. Or Janines Shuckle was around 20 EUR (EX condition (which is usually what I am looking for to complete my binder)), now GD listings start at 60 EUR (EX at 80 EUR).

I really would love to complete the set but I am not willing to pay those prices for cards that were so much cheaper one year ago. I always thought it was just the Karens Umbreon that completely exploded in price but apparently it’s almost the entire set.

You’re someone I always enjoy seeing the cards you pick up, fine taste. I feel you, and you’re not the only one noticing on even small, recently dirt cheap cards. I’ve been ranting about this in recent weeks.

It’s hard man. Sometimes now I’m just wondering if I want to sell a bunch of cards. Maybe to fund the last few remaining goals I have, but also maybe to just be responsible about it.

When I first started buying cards as an adult in 2012, I never wanted to sell a single card. I loved that they were cheap and no one cared. I never had the mentality to buy 2 of everything to sell one day cause those just weren’t my intentions. That’s what would make it so hard to sell anything. But these prices are too ridiculous. Never in a million years would any of us have guessed that set commons would be $50-100 each. And some hitters in MP would be $500-1k. These are nearing mortgage / rent payments. For one card.
