I don’t know if this is the most indicated thread, but I’ve recently purchased a copy of the Gem Pack 2 Eeevee AR listed as NM (Near Mint) and paid market price for it (55€ in Europe). When receiving the copy, I noticed several dents on the back. It already wasn’t a minty copy (white chip on top border + horrible print lines), but I feel like this is very far from NM. What condition would you say it is in if you were listing/buying it (LP, HP, Damaged, etc.). If asking for a partial refund, how much would you think I should be asking for (%-wise or in €s)?
I’ll attach images below. I’ve also made a video trying to show the imperfections with a flashlight, and I hope that also helps: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/jlE-YscXudY
The second dent you posted is kinda deep, so the card is probably around LP+ (cardmarket EX) for me. It doesn’t seem to show through the front surface, but I agree is an annoying situation.
There is a thread, 巨大的中国市场线索 The Giant Chinese Market Thread, for Chinese cards. In my opinion, the card is not near mint. I took a look at the page where people sell that card. I think most people are too confident in their judgment; the quality of the set is not very good. Dents, whitening, and print lines are very common for this set. The majority of these should be listed as excellent. With that being said, I think the card’s condition is excellent- aside from the dent. It doesn’t seem that bad, and for a binder, it’s still a beautiful card. For grading, of course, it’s a miss, and not worth it. Cardmarket guidelines suggest a 10% refund if the grade is incorrect, of course, if it’s not too far away from the initial grade. It’s up to you, you can ask for more.
I’ve seen auction prices in the UK end for like half the price of what they go for in NA, even with big vintage chase cards during this boom. You also have LGS like @quibble’s that are practically giving away cards as a charity.
Is Pokémon just not as popular over there or does it have something to do with people’s preferences for cards in other languages (French etc.)?
The market for high end is just really thin I think. Our low end stuff typically sells for more than NA as a buy it now. But for auctions, I think there is just way less eyeballs than in america, and also way less hypeballers with pockets loaded ready and waiting to buy anything undervalued to flip it for 15% ROI. Like the example provided above would probably be snapped up and shoved in a mystery bag and sold off for $40 by some whatnotter, over here its more likely just going to some kid or someone who chucked a bid on because ‘why not buy something under grading price’
It is less popular for sure (we dont have entire aisles dedicated to trading cards in our big supermarkets for instance) but still very popular
I am no UK expert, but it seems like the UK is an extra isolated market. EU buyers have to pay customs fees, US buyers have to pay exorbitant shipping and now customs fees too. So essentially your market is just other people in the UK. On BINs that might be less of a problem as you can wait for the one person who wants your card, but auctions it seems like the lack of depth in the market comes through.
There is no in-country exclusive language production like Japan or Korea or China to stimulate foreign involvement either, so a lot of the Pokemon infrastructure just appears to be lacking.
SO tired of it. Super informs me that there are a whole lot of new Poke sellers. Not many regulars would endorse that level of cringe bait. Also pretty sure the play these days is crack those grades out, take high quality pics, and let people pay up to chase 10s and 9s. Selling strong PSA 8s just establishes a sub PSA 9 ceiling for the card so matter what nonsense the seller tries to shovel.
