The Giant Art Thread

My parents were both visual artists. So I’m really picky with my art consumption. This was definitely a FoMo buy, but I’m thrilled it was done well. I am amazed how well they imitated the original work colors and strokes. Also, it’s such a better tribute to the original than the pikachu card.

I posted these to Discord yesterday but thought I’d put them up here too. Some ghost Pokemon art I recreated using the style and limitations of the TCG Gameboy games. (64x48 canvas, 4 colors) I think Sableye is my favorite, it gave me the most trouble working on it but I really love how it came out. This was a lot of fun and some great practice with pixel art techniques, I plan on making more soon!

Not Pokémon but this cover art for the Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 OST was illustrated by Ligton, whose last card was SAR Zeraora VSTAR from VSTAR Universe

People often talk about the optimization of modern in terms of pricing, kinda the same for art now isn’t it?

Now that they’ve done one Van Gogh (or 6), you have either artists or randos using image generators to do every art style. The former is to be encouraged but the latter is just shite.

“Oh look what I did” - nah, you couldn’t do it that’s why you used the AI in the first place. And you’re doing the corporation’s work for them in uploading or scraping artists’ art for the software.

As a former working artist, I STILL insist,
art requires a soul and feeling behind every brush stroke. Every note. Every dance step.*

AI art dun’t have it
 Yet.

I have to agree. As somebody who is also into creating art myself, I find it depressing seeing art websites and communities being overrun by AI art. Sites like Deviantart (which I used to really like many years ago before they were bought out and made rubbish UI changes, started deleting people’s “risque” art without proper consultation etc.) are pretty rubbish now with the main landing page for (obviously the recommended stuff on the Home section is based on the styles/artists you follow so is different for everybody) overrun by AI ‘art’. Yes, they eventually implemented a toggle, similar to the NSFW toggle, that stops you seeing AI-generated work, but it only works if the creator has marked it as AI. There are plenty of people publishing work in a rather vague way; not claiming that their ‘art’ is made without AI, but also not being transparent about it.

You’ll notice that I always put the word “art” in quotes when discussing AI becuase, for me, it simply isn’t art. Art for me has always been the result of an individual spending years of their life honing their craft and leaving behind a story where those who appreciate what they do can see their timeline and how their style(s) has evolved over time. And then there is the expression side of it.

The counter argument from those who are very pro-AI is that traditional artists are just salty now that anybody can create stuff on their level without “wasting” years of their life practicing and learning from failures. There is a lot of toxicity from this side imo. Additionally, I’m seeing a lot of AI artists monetising what they do in such a way that reminds me of those who sell NSFW content on the likes of Onlyfans, Patreon etc. and it feels, to me at least, a cheapening of art as a whole.

AI art is fine with me if you are playing around with it for your own personal purposes, but I wouldn’t give somebody a single penny for something that was generated by AI and represents nothing other than a hollow money-making scheme. Obviously regular trad and digital artists monetise and make money too but at least there is human skill behind it and a representation of years of effort and training.

I genuinely put AI art in the same category as any other corner-cutting life “hack” such as medication and “miracle” devices that give you quick abs without any effort. There’s no substance behind it.

Apologies for the huge rant but I just feel really passionate about the AI art issue! If people are selling it and making money then good for them (this is a capitalist economy after all so I would be a hypocrite to say it should be outright stopped) but I do wonder about the people who are actually buying it and funding the whole industry. Ultimately, it always the demand that dictates supply and I guess people just want a cheap piece of art now and would rather not think about the lack of soul and substance as long as they get their legit-looking piece.

On a positive side, it might eventually boost the value and desirability of PHYSICAL hand-drawn/painted originals that are the real deal.

@UKLugia . I am also not a fan of AI art and really do not consider it art. Like you I have spent most of my life creating some kind of art . I agree it is a personal thing to create art. I have always felt that you can teach anyone the techniques to draw an object or paint a scene, yet there will always be something missing if they just don’t have that passion in the work. Some of the best artist in the world endure through time because of the passion and style expressed in their work. The concept of what is art is tricky. For example, some of the ultra minimalistic art is not my thing and I think it is just silly. However, at least they have created and imagined the piece it themselves.

That said, people have been buying cheap produced “art” for generations. In the 70’s there were the black velvet paintings and printed seascapes. In the 80’s/ 90’s computer generated art from photos was big. You can walk into any chain store and buy “art”. To me if someone wants to sell or buy AI generated art so be it. I don’t think of it as art, I more think of it as, maybe decor.

There have been plenty of Gardevoir cards over the years but only a few I really like. This is one that I think nailed it, from a 2019 illustration contest. Shame it never made it to English.
