The correlation between card prices and box prices

The saying that card prices dictate box prices is going around a lot on the internet. So, I decided to check all the Sun & Moon sets to see if this is true. Although I already knew it isn’t as simple as that, the results were still interesting.

Here’s the full row;

1 Team Up (4400)
2 Celestial Storm/Cosmic Eclipse (1600)
3 Unified Minds (1300)
4 Unbroken Bonds/Lost Thunder (1000)
5 Ultra Prism (950)
6 Guardians Rising (800)
7 Forbidden Light (600)
8 Base (450)
9 Burning Shadows (400)
10 Crimson Invasion (300)

There are three sets that should be a lot lower when looking at the card prices; Celetial Storm, Lost Thunder and Guardians Rising. This indeed shows that card prices are only a part of the equation. The box becomes it’s own collectable.

An interesting question is still; why are these boxes so much more expensive. This could be due to scarcity, but also due to the box just looking good.

Im surprised we arent at the stage yet where people claim every pack in their sealed inventory is guaranteed a god pack at this point. Maybe thats where the 100x premium is coming from.

Supply & Demand.

If demand isn’t pushing the boxes higher, it’s usually due to supply. Speculators impact supply and demand, as they buy up sealed product (influencing point market value and relative demand) and remove them from the market for several years (influencing availability of supply). The market price creep of out-of-print sealed product is a self-fulfilling cycle thanks to attrition.
