Tell me why Pokémon TCG is the best collectible out there

Newsroom reference aside. I think the fact that a never ending chain of memorable characters adds to a continuous wave of endless nostalgia. Almost every Pokemon has a key feature that people hold on to. Whether it’s Charlie’s fondness for Alolan Dugtrio’s beautiful Swedish curls, Drif’s fascination with a floating balloon, or banme’s weird obsession with dead corpse Pokemon. And it adds to the charm of collecting! Not only that, but nevermind the artists that get featured, the “feel” of a Pokemon card. Hell, I’ll even say this: Sometimes I appreciate the CGI/3D art because it allows me to focus on some of the great art in a set NOT featured on a rare card. Look at the current thread right now talking about favorite cards from a certain set. People are pointing out the weird and fascinating stories or “feel” of a series of Pokemon cards. No other TCG has as much personality as Pokemon. Magic the Gathering takes it’s art too seriously. Yugioh tries to make everything either adorable, sexy, or a badass. Pokemon is the only depiction of art that showcases a large variety of things but always adds a sense of personality that people can connect to. And it’s because of that that different generations get involved each and every couple of years. Kids are talking about XY cards like we were talking about Neo back in the day. It’s literally transcended different cultures and generations.

There are some things you should know about Trading Card Games, and one of them is that there is absolutely no evidence to support the statement that Pokémon TCG is the best collectible out there. Pokémon TCG is 4th in complexity, 2nd in available variants, 3rd in number of artists, 3rd in amount of rarities, 5th in overuse of CGI and 3D, 3rd in art styles, 2nd in featured sets, 4th in original promos, and 4th in original character design. Pokémon TCG leads the world in only three categories: number of early child addiction, number of children who believe they can restrain wild animals, and cardboard spending, where they spend more than the next twenty-six trading card games combined, twenty-five of whom are direct competitors. None of this is the fault of a 6-year-old elementary student, but you, nonetheless, are without a doubt, a member of the WORST-period-GENERATION-period-EVER-period to “appreciate” trading card games, so when you ask what makes Pokémon TCG the best collectible out there, I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about?! Baseball?!!!

Pokémon sure used to be.

Pokémon introduced us to nostalgia! Pokémon cards were fought over moral reasons, they passed and struck down other TCGs for entertainment reasons. Pokémon waged wars on collecting culture, not people’s creativity. Pokémon thrived, they cared about original art styles for rares, we put our money towards well designed cards, and they never cheated out. Pokémon built great big things, made ungodly product advances, explored the creative universe, cured boredom, and cultivated the world’s greatest artists and the world’s greatest economy on international products. Pokémon reached for the stars, and the company acted like people who appreciated the player base. They aspired to originality; they didn’t belittle it; it didn’t make them feel inferior. They didn’t identify themselves by who they placed for a quick dime, and they didn’t give up so easily on making quality work. And they were able to be all these things and do all these things because they were informed. By great men, men who were revered. The first step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one—Pokémon TCG is not the best collectible out there.

For me it brings back me and my best friend pretending we need to toilet and running to our lockers getting our gameboys and playing them every lunch/playtime for like a whole year fire red was his leaf green was mine and we spent hours looking at guides to trick the game into getting us to 8 and 9 island sadly about 3 hours ago i brought a cheat just to get to to finally complete the goal that was over 10s in the making getting to 8 and 9 island that was a great feeling. Thats what got me into pokemon. What got me into tcg was stopping of at this tiny shop every week with my dad getting packs mostly jungle and base set 2 they were the only ones he had for some reason at this stage i have never played the game or watch the tv series but wanting to pull that holo just to rub it in my sister and brothers face its safe to say 6 hard years of collecting i think i win.
