Species Collectors Keep the Hobby Alive (NOT CLICKBAIT!)

Imagine consistently having the same favourite pokemon over time :face_with_spiral_eyes: gotta pour one out for species collectors

The seller in Poland is too real- twice now I’ve seen Polish card lots with Piplup line cards, twice I’ve bought them, and twice have the sellers made up reasons why they can’t ship the cards (ā€œsorry I sold these to someone else,ā€ ā€œsorry these were in my basement that floodedā€). One day. One day I’ll have them.

On a completely different note, I’ve always loved species collecting and looking through other’s collections. Even if it’s a PokĆ©mon I’ve never had much interest in, there’s something so admirable about dedicating that much to one specific focus. I genuinely love finding niche cards for other species collectors and sending them along, knowing that they’ll be loved and appreciated in a way that very few can.

Wait, is it an unpopular opinion to like Eelektross?

I don’t collect it or anything, but it was one of my favorite from Gen 5 because I used it through my first playthrough. I always thought it was cool. I still do, but it takes a back seat to pokemon that already take a back seat to my favorites.

As a Pikachu specific collector I relate to this post A LOT. The amount of specific and weird information I and other pikachu collector buddies know is comical. And there is still more to learn every day! Species collectors keep the hobby alive!! :joy:

I have a pretty eclectic collection. I collect species, certain sets, special promos, errors, and whatever speaks to me.

What makes me uninterested in set collecting is buying all of the cards that I have no interest in. What makes me uninterested in species collecting is buying duplicate arts of different languages or 1st ed/unlimited variants. So I fall somewhere in the middle.

I only collect specific sets where I love the entirety of the artwork. I only collect species in English with the occasional Japanese-exclusive release, but never duplicating art and only up to a certain point in time where I still have interest in the art/design.

I don’t fit nicely into the boxes of species collector or set collector, but I find that I am much happier this way to purchase what I like and leave the rest.

Does someone have to collect every possible variation of every card featuring a Pokemon to be considered a species collector? Will I be kicked from the species collector club if I don’t do that? These are the questions that keep me up at night.

Don’t listen to this person, the secret rules of species collectors club are undeniable, you will either accept them or face the consequences. You see a doodle of your pokemon made by a toddler, you buy it.

currently trying to collect all of the celebi cards, only missing a couple of the pricier ones.

Also if anyone knows where I can find a copy of the Celebi binder from the NY pokemon center, I’ve been looking everywhere for a long time…

Ugh, I love this thread. Crazy to see how much species collecting has grown in the hobby since this was posted. I love species collecting so much and the people that I’ve met on my own journey that do as well have been awesome!
