I’m a few cards away from the master set myself, though I’d suggest to wait a bit as prices remind me of the crazy vintage spikes in 2021. There’s also a few reverse holos like Ditto that I simply cannot find on eBay or anywhere at the moment.

Anything is possible. I recall being on the fence about doing 1st Ed base psa 9 set so I stated with shadowless, then it became 1st Ed anyway, then I finished shadowless. What started as something thought impossible became possible.
I suggest starting with expensive cards first otherwise it will just be more expensive in a few years.
No, not realistic. Several years back I estimated (and made a post on here asking for input), and the way I figured it, a Skyridge NM set would set me back something like 7-8k USD. that was 2-3 years ago. Prices have gone way up, and it’s almost impossible to find NM raw Skyridge that aren’t graded - which of course, fetch a much higher premium. Right now, I’d say it would cost me AT LEAST 15k, probably more, because I would need to buy and crack PSA slabs for the holos and crystals, which of course are the most expensive cards.

I’m several days late to the conversation - but have been working on set binders of non-holo/Holo for English Expedition, Aquapolis, and Skyridge, and Japanese VS series, McDonalds, and E-series Promos. (skipping reverse holos) for 5 years now. Completed Expedition, VS series, McDonalds, and E-series Promos (Except Tropical Mega Battle 008/P of course). Have 3 Aquapolis and 9 Skyridge Holos left…
Been a LONG journey, more expensive than budgeted, and developed a new set of expectations from a condition standpoint. I originally set out for NM only, then adjusted to LP for Skyridge Holos, and now am hunting PSA 4-6’s and MP/HP or even Damaged in some cases depending on the damage. PSA 1 Crystal Zard for the win!
Gone to local card shows, and a collect-a-con… I’m finding e-series increasingly harder to find, and of course the prices have gone through the roof with the boom and overall scarcity.
@smpratte’s tried and true advice would have served me well - I wish I got all the hardest to find, most expensive ones first, and went harder in 2020! I made a good dent, but took a few years off and coming back to it is when I realized quickly I needed new expectations… The most expensive, hardest to find cards went from 800-1000 to 1500-3000. A heck of a lot more of an increase than i saw with the commons and basic holos… plus, they got immensely harder to find and it’s really a sellers market.
For me it’s just for a binder. I totally get the draw for NM, but my findings are many of the top holos in NM are now be 1500-3000+ a piece. That’s just for Crystals, Umbreon, Gengar, Gyardos, etc… so not mathing it, but NM set easily over 25k+
Starting with Vs. series and looking for some bundles of commons sounds like a good start! For me, getting cards going and in the binder motivated me to keep searching - and it’s been just as much about the chase with my kids and building the binder, as enjoying the binder! Don’t break your budget, and have fun!

Thank you to everyone who gave me ideas and advice! Even though it might not seem like the smartest thing to do right now, I’m planning to start the master set this week!
I’ve already purchased a matching binder and found my old Skyridge box (sadly, I no longer have any of the cards), but it’s definitely going to be an interesting journey!
I’ll create a separate post to keep track of the progress, thank you guys
