Silvering Causes

Hey all! So I was recently going through my old wotc graded cards and got to thinking about silvering, because the majority of my fossil and jungle cards have some to significant silvering along the front edges. I still remember pulling many holographic Jungle/Fossil cards straight from the pack with differing levels of silvering back in the day, so I know this is the case for most of my cards.

I’m hoping someone can provide further insight into what causes this silvering to the older wotc cards, specifically the fossil and jungle set holos. My current understanding is that this silvering is caused by the way the cards were cut in the factory, which is why they can be pulled straight from the pack with significant silvering. However, is there any other methods that these older cards can get silvering along the edges such as poor storage or even after graded by PSA?

An admin or moderator can delete this post as I already got an answer to my question from a different source…

Can you share your source who give you the answers?

Sure thing mate! I posed the question to some fellow collectors I’m friends with on Instagram and Discord and they were able to provide me some insight that I was looking for. I’m surprised not many people on E4 seem to know of silvering, but I can share my findings with everyone here so we are all aware going forward!

Basically they assured me that silvering was indeed caused primarily in the factory by cutting the cards with dulled blades which did impact Jungle and Fossil era holographic cards more significantly than other sets. They said that another method silvering occurs would be damage to the edges of the card to cause chipping, such as the card drastically shifting within the pack. They further assured me that silvering damage is highly unlikely to occur by PSA graders and within the PSA case.

Hope this is helpful to others as it has been for me!

The way your original post was worded (before the Feb 1st edit), you were essentially asking if PSA had damaged your cards, which is an impossible question to answer with respect to edge wear. You also answered your own question in the same post :+1: But I’m glad to hear you found an answer you’re happy with

Thanks mate, and yeah that was why I wanted to know if anybody has encountered silvering damage to cards caused by something other than straight from the pack. I made that edit because I figured people got hung up on the potential of PSA damaging the card themselves, which is why I took that part out, so people could let me know if silvering damage after pulling from the pack is even possible. I wasn’t sure if the silvering could occur via the PSA graders or within the PSA case, but seeing as how it hasn’t happened to anybody here or others I posed the question to, that set my mind at ease.
