Shining Mew CoroCoro Holofoil

Hi everyone,

I have a question that I can’t seem to find an answer to—or at least, no confirmed answer.

I’d like to know if there’s a card that’s printed on glossy stock and also features a holographic foil.

The first and only card that comes to mind is Shining Mew from CoroCoro (2001), but I haven’t received any confirmation from card owners. In my opinion, if all the cards featured in CoroCoro magazine are glossy, then Shining Mew—even though it’s the only holographic card in CoroCoro—must be glossy as well.

Speaking of this card’s holofoil, to my knowledge, there are only two other cards from the original and neo eras that feature a holofoil covering the entire card—not just the artwork. Based on my research, this is actually a card that was first given a classic (Cosmos) holographic finish and then had an additional layer of foil/glitter printed over the entire card. The other two cards are Shining Magikarp and Shining Gyarados (Awakening Legends), the first two known alternate-color cards in the Pokémon TCG.

Thanks to anyone who can confirm that:

- Shining Mew is the only card that is both glossy AND holo

- Shining Mew, along with Shining Magikarp and Shining Gyarados (Awakening Legends), are the only three cards with a full-card holofoil

(maybe the experts on this forum,@Quuador or @pfm, have some answers…)

I’ll check my own Shining Mew copy later on, whether it’s glossy or not. If it is, you might indeed be correct that it’s the only glossy + holofoil combi. I’ve just checked my spreadsheet of my entire Pokémon collection, and I hadn’t marked it as glossy, but maybe I simply forgot years ago when I added it to my collection. :person_shrugging:

One other that comes to mind is Ancient Mew (all four WotC-era versions, three Japanese versions and one international one), although I can understand seeing it as a rather special TCG card.
The Trade Please! promo with full holofoil back of the card also come to mind.

I’m currently at the office, so I’ll get back to this later on when I have more time.

I would categorize DPPt Japanese secret rares as glossy and holo.

I would distinguish “glossy stock” from a glossy holo layer. There are cards that have a shimmer effect plus the standard cosmosy holo effect.

this image shows both at once

Ones that come to mind are the shinings you posted, the Japanese SH holos I believe have this too. There are TRR holos like this too and the Masters Scroll has it. I think a better way to distinguish it is looking at the backside. I can’t do it now but would be interesting to see a comparsion on the backside between corocoro non holos and some of these double holoed cards

Yes, I’m familiar with these two cards and own them, but they aren’t glossy—they’re just the only two cards in the TCG with a holographic back.

When I said “full-card holofoil,” I was referring solely to the front of the card—meaning not just the artwork.

In fact, you can see the glossy finish that’s characteristic of CoroCoro Comics and Vending Machine cards, but the holofoil seems more like a partial layer of glitter covering the entire card. So I agree with @pfm, who distinguishes between “glossy stock” and “glossy holo layer.”

Once again, I’m focusing exclusively on cards from the Original and Neo Eras.

That’s strange—I never thought to look at the backs of the glossy cards (“glossy stock”). But there does seem to be a slight difference—a very slight one—the back appears shinier overall than cards printed on “regular card stock.” The red on the Poké Ball is also darker, but I’m not sure if that’s standard.

That said, based on the latest posts, I think Shining Mew is the only card—among all the Original and Neo Era cards—that’s both glossy AND holographic.

As for cards with holofoil covering the entire front of the card—even though it’s a layer of glitter added after the holofoil layer on the rectangle of the artwork—I think that, again, only in the Original and Neo Eras sets, there are just these three Shining cards (Magikarp, Gyarados, and Mew).

Thank you all for your detailed responses !

I was indeed mostly focusing on your second bullet-point with those examples. Neither is glossy indeed.
Ancient Mew is also full holofoil on the front, though. :person_shrugging:

iirc japanese crystals, japanese gen 3/4 themedeck holos, and gen 4 japanese secret rares + shinies are all glossy + foil

Thanks for this information, but I don’t think these cards are glossy or holographic—at least not with the same glossy coating used on the CoroCoro cards or the Vending Machine cards, nor with the same holographic coating used on the first cards.

AGAIN, I’m only interested in cards from the Original and Neo Eras. But thanks anyway!
