Came across this discusion on PokeGym from a few years back. It was a discussion between Scott, me, and Jason(cbd) as well as others about the value difference between BGS 10 and PSA 10.
Sometimes it’s interesting to look back on these discussions when you have a little more perspective.
In this case I think we all had some good points that have stood the test of time.
As a side note: as most here know I ended getting a BGS 10 1st base Charizard and paid 10,800.00 and turned Down an 18k offer. This card was graded way after this conversation though.
I have to say i would be willing to pay alot more for a bgs black label charizard… Id love to get my old schools ex’s into pristine black label. I think the 9.5’s value is a tad higher than a mint 9 PSA, but BGS mint 9 is pretty shameful, and i wouldnt go near it. There pristine black label is clearly amazing and destroys the gem mint 10 psa in my opinion, only only because garys recent testing of sending in 30 GEM 10’s and they didnt pass one single one to even a gold label… You just can’t argue how insanely GEM your card must be if garys pack fresh perfect gem 10’s cant even get a grade. My Gem mint 10 1st ed shadowless zard i had looked shit compared to the Gem 10 1st ed shadowless blastoise gary sold me, and the blastoise was absolutely perfect. I now crazily wish that one day ill obtain my collection in BGS 10 some how, or BGS 10 black label no raritans xD … There truely will never be a population past 1 on bgs pristine no rarities, if that ever happens to the holos. Making them, in my opinion, much more valueble and rare than Trophies.
If only there was someone on youtube who ran a BGS service so I could start submitting with them. xD
Not at all. It is perfect for a certain demographic. But the modding is VERY heavy handed, the posting traffic is slow, and the average user is a lot younger. Doesn’t leave much room for personality, community, and all the pros/cons that come along with them.
I forgot to mention, that crackrockmcaib got a 9.5 shadowless mewtwo recently and I THINK he cracked it out of the case and sent it off to PSA, and they gave it a 9, so he gave up on ol shadowless mewtwo and bought ebirdmans GEM MINT 10 shadowless mewtwo. I am not sure what to think other than PSA thought it wasnt a perfect 10, and rounded it down to a 9, even though it might have been just as MINT as a GEM mint 10. So yeah the thing I like about BGS is there subgrades, which would be very fun analizing all those subgrades when a big bunch comes back from grading. I think a Card that is GEM mint deserves to get a GEM MINT grade when the centering is just a little off as apposed to a Centered but whitening on the back getting a 10, but then i suppose there would be alot more GEM 10’s out there from PSA, so at the same time i don’t… I suppose this is where BGS really comes in with there BGS GOLD LABEL, but then the black label is overkill which is thrilling. ehhh
Depending on the moderator. Some mods were very lax and others just vacant. Depending on the area of the site. Isn’t Dan a mod still for the collecting area?
Nowadays the posting traffic is slow because of Virbank cropping up and taking all us traders away hahaha
I think theyve fallen off because the management from the lowliest mod all the way to pop has been awful. They were so impulsive and shortsighted it took all the fun out of the site. Good riddance I say.
nice points you made in that thread. You mentioned something about BGS being more involved in their cards prices compared to PSA. What did you mean by that?
I was referring to how at least in some their videos, the representatives of the company are too concerned with potential after market value. Also, I think for non-sports cards, especially pokemon, the grades under 9 are not well defined.
