Lorcana has one thing going for it; Disney.
If Lorcana would’ve been a TCG with a complete fresh IP oh boy would it bomb.
While it has the Disney brand behind it, it still doesn’t have the insane multimedia synergy behind it like Pokémon does. When you think Pokémon you immediately think of the games, anime, and cards.
Disney fans/collectors are so fragmented in their specific collecting interests. There has been so many other Disney products that just fizzled and flopped for me to have any confidence in this long term.
Neither did mtg. Yugioh did have the anime
Well Magic didn’t need it lol. It was the first modern TCG in existence.
Yugioh is literally the card game from the show. It’s a show about a card game.
But the point was that being a Disney product doesn’t Inherently imply the product will be successful because the product isn’t something that most people associate with Disney. I didn’t say that it was a requirement.
I’m not super familiar with Disney’s popularity but I assume the brand name will help instead of hurt the chances of the card game succeeding.
Well yeah, no one said it will hurt it lol.
I do think a lot of it is happening due to the TCG hype in 2020. Personally, I think some of them are just money-grabs (Marvel and Disney). However, I’m actually really excited about new TCGs like MetaZoo! I haven’t done a lot of research on it yet, but I enjoy seeing the new characters, art styles, and mechanics of a new TCG! I think it’s nice for communities like this to encourage the creativity of making an entirely new game ![]()
Not enough talk about the One Piece TCG. Some insane art on those cards!
To be frank, the OP artwork is just alright - like screenshots of the anime. Not really awesome.
Ever since they killed off my fave character in such tragic manner, I stopped watching and become anti-fan. I did opened a few packs but only OP-02, in hope of getting his chase card but gave up totally now.
Most of the cards are not screenshots of the anime or manga. One Piece CCG artwork has been very impressive to me. I initially wanted to dismiss this TCG because I didn’t want to start spending on another one. I could only hold off for so long. The parallel cards are too good. Lots of awesome promos as well. It’s cheap, available, and always selling. I decided to grade some to see if they would sell and I’ve been really surprised how well they have been doing so I’ll be sending in more soon. I’m bias, but I think this TCG is going to stick.
Agree, a lot of TCGs just try and copy the success of MTG, Pokemon or even Yu-Gi-Oh. It’s really hard to make a unique and distinctive game that grabs on to people. Where I live, I’ve seen Flesh & Blood do very well. Lots of in-person playing and small tournaments happening with it. I honestly feel like it’s filled a niche spot that MTG used to fill before things like EDH really got big and popular where you can just sit down and do some quick 1v1 playing. So it’s nice to see some things come along that’s new and fresh in some way.
MetaZoo seems like it had good potential, but I personally got turned off by the heavy investor/influencer elements it had in the early days. Like I could understand making some limited promo or signed cards or something, but it just had way too much “investment” talk going on I feel. It just didn’t seem organic to me at all. Also the most expensive card (the Moth dude) has lost like 80-90% of it’s value last I checked, so I don’t know if it can recover as a sustainable TCG.
I had never actually heard of Flesh and Blood until this thread! It looks really cool. I’m excited to learn more about it.
Yeah, I agree that the investor thing kind of sucks. From what I know about MetaZoo (which isn’t much), I think people probably thought it looked cool and had lots of potential like you said, and since it became a thing around the TCG hype and people saw card prices from TCGs like Pokémon skyrocketing, they thought they would jump on the investment train. However, I think since people are seeing this all play out and getting turned off by it all, the prices are dropping. Personally, I hope the investment toxicity fades with the lower prices and the TCG can regain its footing. I’m also hesitant to jump in right now with everything going on, but if that happens, I would like to try it out. I don’t know if that’s viable anymore, but that’s my hope.
MetaZoo is such a joke and really only is printed because people think it will have value. But it’s a TCG without real players. It’s all speculation.
Yeah nobody is playing MetaZoo. I tried to find gameplay videos and articles in its first few months and that kind of content made up about 1% of MetaZoo-related things. The other 99% is pure speculation and hyping.
Yeah, FaB is pretty cool. It’s similar to MTG in ways, but has it’s own “thing” going on as well. I picked up a couple starter decks for like $20 just to try it out. I would say it’s less complex as well and easier to learn at first than MTG, but still has some good depth once you get into it. I’ve seen it growing increasingly popular the past year or so. It’s also quite affordable for the most part, so I think that helps get people into it as well.
I don’t know much about the current state of MetaZoo myself. The negativity seemed to really increase in the past year or so and then other people seem to be still enjoying it regardless. It’s by far one of the more polarizing TCGs I’ve seen. People seem to either love it or hate it overall, and not much in-between.
That sounds really cool! I’ll have to check it out. One of the biggest things that has kept me from getting into Magic is how complex it all seems starting out, so I’m glad Flesh and Blood is easier to get into. And I’m always glad for a more affordable game lol.
Yeah, I’m seeing that. It’s crazy how it’s gotten to this point.
I think a lot of the new TCGs are trying to cash in on the 2020-2021 hype/boom.
MetaZoo has a lot of speculation around it. Looking at the art style and the holo patterns, you can really see they were trying to tap into the nostalgia for vintage Pokemon. Flesh and Blood seems like it’s a very solid game with a good, and growing, player base. I’ve picked up a couple of blitz decks and played some games with them and enjoyed it. It has some unique ideas and mechanics as well as some impressive art. Of all the TCGs that have come out in the past couple of years, I think it may be the most likely to stand the test of time. Lorcana I can see doing well for a while, obviously a very popular IP and a fanbase who are willing to spend large amounts on parks, other merchandise, etc and also more family friendly than most TCGs, both in terms of gameplay and art, so it will have a wide audience.
When the dust settles, I think the big 3 (Pokemon, Magic and Yu Gi Oh) will continue to be the big 3 - possibly a big 4 with Flesh and Blood in there too if it continues to grow and produce sets with good art and interesting gameplay. I don’t see any other TCG overtaking Pokemon in terms of popularity from a collecting viewpoint though.
MetaPoo, it’s the MML/Pyramid Scheme of trading cards
Dragon ball super is going through the shitter right now, it’s on its last limbs… hard to sustain a trading card game where there are limited characters and people only care about 5 of them. 2018-2024? Rip DBS card game.
Oof. Is it really that bad of a picture for DBS? Got a friend who plays often. That sucks for him.
