QotD: With all the hype, what is a good Pokemon memory from the past 30yrs?

Went into a local bric-a-brack shop with my visiting son (a Dr) ; just to show him the Dragon ball stuff I’d noticed driving by.
He has master sets of the first 5 original Pokemon releases, while I collect the promo’s etc only. He walked out with a few Pokemon cards he found on a dusty unloved corner table, including a black star promo… the cards for his little tyke, and the promo as a trophy…, and couldn’t stop mocking me all day.

A memory from the last 30 years that I will never forget is when I opened my first ever pokemon pack as a kid . I saved up all my allowance money and asked my mom to drive me to blockbuster on a Friday night and there it was a single pack blister of Crystal Gaurdians. I didn’t even wait to get home to open it. I just remember the joy of pulling a reverse holo delta species Charmeleon.

When I was in high school, it was very much not cool to be into Pokémon, to the point where you really don’t talk to anybody else about it unless you also know that they play.

And you do this weird song and dance of like I think you hinted at knowing something about this, like do I go first or do I wait for you and that’s how you find community.

But I used to play in the TCG leagues and would drive over to my local league every Saturday to play with my core group of like 8. My swim coach who I didn’t know was into magic also played at that same place, which is like 30 minutes away, but magic was not usually on Saturdays so I didn’t ever see him except they had a tournament that day.

So we had this funny moment of like I see you here. You see me here, I know you know I know that you know, we’re not gonna make a big to do about it, but we just have this little additional piece of like yeah, we’re cool.

Mum taking me to EB Games for the store distributions for legendaries/shinines + grandmother taking me to get packs after school. Playing Pokemon monopoly with my parents also a fond memory. Playing the mini-games in Pokemon Stadium with a couple of childhood friends also comes to mind:)

My spouse introducing me to pokemon in university, I remember playing my first game on my first console (I got X and he got Y). Going with our uni roommates to buy packs from the convenience store in the Village at UBC, and learning to play the TCG in our dorm! (not so fun - ALMOST going to spectate at Worlds in Vancouver in 2013, walking past the venue, and deciding we wanted to just explore Stanley Park or whatever instead :sob::joy:)

Then hanging out with Toronto friends and with all the great international people we met at regionals and worlds!! Late nights in hotel rooms or hotel lobbies chatting! Building up my binder of friends’ autos, too! It’s so fun to flip through.

The fun activities here on E4, and being more creative with my collection - including the signed cards I love to hand out at events, and my watercolour adventures. :hugs:

Joining E4 and how they took care of me even though they should have banned me at LEAST 5 times by now.

To this day, I very fondly remember playing capture the flag and designing secret bases in the underground in Pokemon Diamond with my cousins. It is probably my most cherished gaming related memory. I always loved all the different traps you were able to place.

I remember us wanting to play on the airplane and not being sure whether or not we would be arrested for using online communications to connect to each other’s DS. The joys of being a naive kid
