I’d argue the opposite, this is a telltale sign someone will be out of the hobby in 8-12 months

Oh man, that’s a tough one to answer. We’re all probably a little biased here, considering this is a forum filled with users dropping significant amounts of money on the trading cards, among other things. I’d reckon the majority of users here could name every Pokemon (maybe not from memory, but at least with an accompanying photo), have complete game living dexes, know the matchup chart like the back of our hands, multiple thousands of cards, etc. etc… So we’re on the extreme end of nerdiness.

I’d say that your typical enthusiast that enjoy the games when they release, rips packs here and there, maybe plays POGO, and has a few plushies or keychains can be considered a pretty big Pokemon fan, even if they have blank spaces in their general franchise knowledge.

On the other hand, I don’t really consider Genwunners to be sincere fans, because most of them are just dudes that repost a bunch of “only 90’s kids remember…” content on Facebook because they played Red Version on a long car ride one time. I’ve held this opinion ever since the Black and White pre-release era. I remember how much those games got unfairly lambasted on social media.

My favorite way is that they just enjoy when the topic is brought up in any scenario. Whether its about the anime, tcg, merch, VA’s, illustrators, etc. Its just generally fun to talk about all things Pokemon.

artist/binder/thematic binders really show someone’s passion.

in general, naming more than 20 pokemon past gen 3 is a good start.

When you say a pokemon opinion and a kid just slides over to your desk and pushes his friend out of the way to combat said opinion.

I think knowing about Pokemon controversies is a huge indicator that someone is really into Pokemon. It takes a special type of fan to want to examine their favorite hobby with a more critical and questioning eye. Most casual fans would not care at all.

Some major ones that come to mind are depictions of Jynx and Probopass, Porygon causing epileptic seizures in children, Koga’s Ninja Trick and Misty’s Tears, the Uri Geller legal case, etc.
