Helpful Considerations may or may not help some people focus their answer, these are blurred to not bother those who have their own ideas.
I only played a bit of the TCG in the Sun and Moon era, but I thought the one-special-move-per-game gimmick was a fun mechanic (i.e. V-Star and GX moves). The crazy Tag Team GX moves were fun to play with/against.
Delta species and Dark Pokemon were both great, they gave Pokemon such a mature, distinctive and mysterious look.
I also enjoy how Ancient Mew looks, although it never fully sparked an “ancient” card gimmick.
Light and dark variants. I really hope this becomes the main theme of a future game. The dark variants would lend more towards attack stats and the light ones towards defensive stats.
Milly got it right. What made Delta Species so great wasn’t the gimmick itself (type changes are very basic) but how they designed sets and artwork around the gimmick. They had a whole region with lore, landmarks, buildings, and characters that was entirely in the TCG. The artwork was cohesive but still unique. I wish we had more gimmicks like that.
Holon and the scientists working with energy is an incredible story. It always reminds me of how Team Rocket manipulated the radio waves in Johto to force evolution.
Purely gameplay answer, I think it’s tough to judge a whole gimmick as within that gimmick there are good cards, bad cards, toxic cards etc…
If I had to choose one single gimmick card I think it would be this guy, he’s lore accurate, versatile, consistent, and if I remember correctly just made the format a lot better (oh, and he’s putting his little dukes up in the art) -
