The Question of the Day is a way to facilitate community discussion to help members ponder the unanswered questions of the world that are somehow relating to the hobby. Questions are many times open ended and up to interpretation. Feel free to post your thoughts in as much or as little detail as you’d like.
Helpful Considerations may or may not help some people focus their answer, these are blurred to not bother those who have their own ideas.
Today’s Question:
*QotD: What assumptions do people make about your collection considering your pfp, or username, that are not true? * (This was a suggested question)
Helpful Considerations: Do you not actually love that pokemon? Are you not always represented by it? Have you expanded beyond your namesake?
I think some assume that I only collect Dragonite cards or that I am a Dragonite species master collector (i.e., every TCG Dragonite ever printed) - both of which are false. I collect many different species, some complete sets, exclusive promos and contest cards, error cards, and signed cards. Regarding my Dragonite collection, I haven’t purchased many of the mid-era and modern cards because I think they are particularly ugly.
I would like to participate in the QOTD, however anything you could assume about me from my username and/or profile picture would probably be very accurate
My pfp probably couldn’t make it more clear but my username still connects some people to Japan. It’s Yoh-pon-nes, not japonnes or japanese or anything like that
Maybe that I’m a Pikachu collector from my username or maybe a Charizard collector or Arita signature collector from my pfp. None of which are true although i do appreciate all of them and have some of those in my collection (except i don’t own an Arita sig yet).
When i signed up to efour.proboards my name was already taken (“Ash” - who would of guessed?) and i kinda had to think of a Pokémon card related username for the first time and i came up with this generic one lol If i could i probably would of changed it but it’s not that important and i wouldn’t want to loose any amount of recognition that i may have with the lovely people on efour
I mean any assumption about ralts is probably true.
gotten a few people thinking I’m a 12 year old boy because they see the rek part and think it means rekt (I came up with the rek thing when I was like. 8 as part of worldbuilding for a story)
and also that I don’t collect past ralts. I still mostly collect ralts but I’ve got enough dialga to warrant a mini collection.
I feel like anyone with an unusual Pokemon in their name or pfp who talks to enough people will inevitably hear
“Oh you must have all the xxxx Pokemon PSA 10!”
“Wanna buy this xxxx Pokemon off me (full price nothing special of a card)”
I’ve also had people win a recent auction, and then immediately try to flip wailmer to me. Like do you think I don’t see every auction?! I’m in the matrix
Some species collectors definitely do go the obvious route - PSA 10 for every card that exists, I never went that route but people usually assume I did
Ill have people constantly ask me my favorite eeveelution after I tell them eevee is my favorite, and ill be like “I dont really care for them” and theyre like “why?”. I show them some picture of my stuff and theyre like “Oh i get it now.”
Can’t remember having discussion about this subject with anyone, however they’d probably assume my collection is focused around all kinds of snake/serpent Pokemon.
I don’t know if this qualifies, but I changed my avatar from the Illustrator pika, which it was for probably a decade, because people overly associated me with the card. While I love the art, and everything about the release, it was exhausting being so associated with the card, mainly all the bickering around sales.
I’m pretty sure that if it weren’t for the autofill of @Q, I would almost never be tagged on this forum or on Discord.. People assume they can spell, but when they type my username, it’s very clearly they in fact cannot.. You’d think people might remember it when I sign every post on this forum with my username, but alas.
