Poll: How would you handle a low value return?

Say you ordered a $5 card but was sent a $2 version of the artwork instead (think holo vs non holo).
How would you handle it as a seller? Sadly as a buyer I have ran into all 3 types of sellers. Remember, the actual value is $2!

My most annoying story. Bought a Flareon VMAX prize pack card on tcgplayer for $20, it was worth $20. Seller sent the regular Evolving Skies Flareon that was worth $2 at the time. The seller emailed a return label that costs $4. Not only did they lose money with the return, they pissed me off having me use my own shipping supplies to return it. Worst part is, it wasn’t even for me, the card was for a friend

Neither me nor anyone who buys on my recommendation would ever do business again with someone who as much as suggested that I had to ship a $2 card back to get my refund because they fucked up. The idea that the shipping would be on my dime is laughable. It’s not a realistic scenario for me unless the seller wants to lose money. :norway:

I once had a 5-day $10000 ish wire go through to a seller but due to a miscalculation on one of the many banking fees, the money came through $30 short. So I apologized for any inconvenience and sent the remaining $30 ($50 for good measure) via another 3-day paypal transfer, having already lost hundreds in fees. Of course, the seller in question was a wealthy entrepreneur so the whole idea that he would forcefully insist on the $30 after being a major pain in the ass through the entire process was one thing, but the guy also wouldn’t ship until he got his $30. What am I going to do, refuse to send you your $30 dollars and have my $10000 stay in limbo?

I generally take the L both as a seller and as a buyer. It’s just not worth the hassle for these low value things.

I thought it was common sense, since most people have the decency to at least offer partial refund, but apparently it’s not the case. Some are just weird and find pleasure in pissing you off maybe. The dude insisting on getting $30 on a 10k wire is nuts

Glad everyone’s in agreement.

I actually had this basically happen to me. Around 2019 or so I ordered a holo expedition arbok but received the reverse holo version instead. The picture for the listing was mistakenly the holo version but the description did say reverse holo. I believe I paid around 5 dollars are so for the card. The seller wanted me to return, but I eventually convinced the seller to just refund me.

Twice for the same card

I had a seller send me the wrong card twice. They wanted me to return the card the first time. I did. Mind you, similar case. I was sent a 5 cent bulk holo though. On the second one I told them to just refund me and I’ll send their bulk back again if they want to pay for it again. I just got the refund without any further communication. :man_shrugging: I am always confused by these things. It was for some non-holo deck variant that was like $3 or something.

These are the worst! Sellers have the 5 cent holo set card and put it in the $3 non holo listing. That was my example of a seller asking me to pay postage to return the card. I informed them nicely that that was not the correct way to handle it, then the refund came and I donated the holo card.

Happen once for me as a seller. Buyer bought a lot of Shadowless cards from me and in the lot, I had sorted an Unlimited Double Colorless Energy into my Shadowless cards. I sent them the correct card once they contacted me. Buyer offered to mail it back PWE but I told them to keep it since it was my mistake.

Sorry to hear you have to deal with this now big dawg.

When I was starting out a seller sent me $30 of fake cards and insisted that I pay shipping to send them back to them before getting a refund

If the seller screwed up, the seller should take the L

if it was a higher value, lets say $20 or more, and the buyer screwed up, then I’d offer them the refund if they pay shipping

That is brutal. I had a few run ins with fake cards. Usually it’s never a problem. One time the seller had it buried in the description (not the title) and offered to refund for the cards but not the shipping. I had ebay comp me for the shipping portion of the order. Lesson learned, read even the depths of the description. It was like 4x $8 cards so figured why read all that.

In what universe would “Buyer sends card back, BUYER pays return shipping” be considered a reasonable option

I mean, if you (as a buyer) have to send a low-ish value card back, that isn’t worth the seller sending a tracked label for, I don’t mind sending back a card via a stamped envelope on my dime. I’m not going to wait for them to mail me a stamp in a stamped envelope before I return the card. I’d rather just get my refund and have the seller have their card back and lose out on $0.74 or whatever than demand that they send me a stamp or that they must let me keep their card. This would not be a favored route to take as a seller, but it also isn’t an incomprehensible scenario.

E.g. Did this with a reverse holo Expedition Cloyster that I ordered off TCGPlayer that was I think around $10? They sent me the wrong numbered one (the reverse holo of the holo version rather than the non-holo version). It’s cheap enough that you wouldn’t want to send a tracked label but decent enough that you might want the card back as a seller. So I sent it back via a stamped envelope that I provided. It doesn’t happen often enough that I need to fight anyone over $1 for.

If it’s a $2 card and the error is fully on me I’d fully refund the buyer and let them keep the card just to hopefully avoid a negative or neutral feedback. If I still had the correct card I’d send them that one free of charge.

Once we start getting more expensive ($15-20+) I’d probably have them return the card with a shipping label I paid for.

Outside of obvious seller mistakes like sending the wrong card I will insist that the card be returned. Sometimes buyers claim a “problem” in the hopes you’ll refund and let them keep the card, or ask for a partial refund because of a condition disagreement.

Let’s just say I don’t think his net worth was attributable to his astonishingly high IQ. Dude was definitely on the slower side. Baby steps and teeth pulling from message A to message Z. His packaging was ass too.

Let’s say the card is indeed a $2 card being asked to be returned. Seller sends you a 74 cent label created from stamps.com and you send it back. Now they sell the $2 card on ebay - they cleared 66 cents from the ebay sale, so negative 8 cents overall to have the hassle of making the return label, listing the card, and shipping it back out, plus all the communications and asking for the buyers email address to send the return label to. The tcgplayer seller I am dealing with right now isn’t the brightest. Tempted to just leave negative feedback and rip the card up at this point
