Poll: Have you ever intentionally bought the non holo version of a holo card?

Ok I’m aware even asking this question is a huge boom indicator. I have bought a couple non holo versions of WOTC cards because I liked the art but wasn’t interested in paying 5x for the holo version. In some cases the artwork was also easier to see, but price has always been the biggest driver here.

It was very freeing for me to realize I could just…do this. I don’t think non holo is an acceptable compromise if the holo is what you really want. Nor do I think these cards are “undervalued.” I’m just curious to see who else has done this and why!

  • Have you ever intentionally bought the non holo version of a holo card?
  • No
  • Yes, to complete a set
  • Yes, in order to see the artwork more clearly
  • Yes, because it’s what I could afford

I really do like some of them but as far as my collection is concerned, non-holos are collateral.

Absolutely!
But I also have the holo versions to sell when Gas becomes 50$ a gallon.

I voted to complete a set…but I also agree that you can see some of the background artwork more clearly.

Not yet, but one day I hope to buy the non holo English Espeon Gold Star because the holo Japanese version will likely remain far out of my price range.

Lately plenty of times so I can fill certain SV sets with non holo variants.

Also back in the day I absolutely wanted graded no holo 5/82 Dark Dragonite over regular version, the creation process starting from it being placed in the middle of uncommon sheet is such interesting story.

All hail the wonderful Aya Kusube art :raising_hands::person_bowing:

Absolutely! In fact, it may be an ‘unpopular opinion’, but I actually think there are plenty of holo cards where the non-holo version looks just as visually appealing.

The No Holo Dragonites were some of the first errors that I wanted for my collection. I’m glad to own the 1ED and Unlimited copies today. They’re pretty neat.

Or even better  :

Love how the arms in the background are visible!

(Also, this was from @camrok37 - big thanks for agreeing to part with it )

I voted to complete the set. I bought a couple of promo card sets which have both Holo and Non-Holo versions so I could complete them.

It is very subtle, but it is there. Also the rarity aspect changes on certain promos, based on Holo or no.

Cheers!

sometimes non-holo versions of set cards that are only holo these days come in various theme decks, and I like to get these unloved versions for a low price to fill out a set. Sometimes a non-holo version for whatever reason can be relatively rare due to distribution, and I think such quirks are the spice of life.

In terms of normal circumstances, I buy what I want and enjoy it. Non-holo versions are usually the best for themed binders. Good value, easier and more chill to find a good copy too.

For my main collection goals I’m a completionist, so I buy both the holo and non-holo cards. :person_shrugging:

But if we ignore those for a moment, there indeed have been cards I bought the non-holo (or Reverse Holo I might add) on purpose, since the artwork is better visible.
