Pokemon popularity driving demand

Hello peoples,

I was curious if there was any historical comparison to the rise of umbreon since Eevee Heroes/Evolving Skies?

When I got back into the hobby during covid, I started picking up vintage japanese umbreon cards in mint condition from Japan (thanks to youtubers like smpratte), and the cards were reasonably priced. In a post moonbreon/sunbreon world, there seems to be a premium for umbreon cards due to its popularity and exposure increasing. Looking at the prices of my cards, it is bittersweet how much they have gained in value. These cards bring me joy regardless of their value, but the increase has affected those I have yet to catch.

So, has this happened in the past with another pokemon? The love umbreon has received in modern sets has fuelled the hype and im wondering how much worse can things get?

A similarity can be drawn to Gengar VMax from Fusion Strike. It became the poster child for modern Gengar hype that trickled to vintage. However, these Pokemon were popular before alt arts existed. It may have put fuel on the fire, but that fire was destined to burn.

Dragonite and Tyranitar sort of come to mind, but i’m not sure if there was a specific motivator in the same way Gengar had.

I feel like Pokemon Go fuelled popularity of Dragonite and Tyranitar even more.

Pretty sure the more you use a Pokemon (whether that be in the video games, TCG or elsewhere) the more you like it. Whatever the term is in psychology.

Like I think I was pretty ambivalent about Tyranitar and then it was such a staple in Pokemon Go, I can’t recall when I started to just accept it.
