User reviews say it’s better than the expected meme, have you guys played it?
I wonder if Pokemon will take action due to the imitation?
I don’t see any Pokemon
Admittedly I’m slightly curious if this violates any trademarks in some weird way, haha. Pokemon has a pretty wide IP and this definitely has some twisted Pokemon vibes. I’ll probably try it out at some point!
Enjoy it while it lasts. The game lifted a ton from other games. I would be surprised if it stays up a week.
whether its certain features, or the entire creature, some are more of a stretch and some are pretty blatant. the company has also developed a game based around being an AI artist which leads to suspicion that these could be from AI generated designs based on pokemon.
i understand pokemon doesn’t have a monopoly on creatures, but you gotta admit, some of these are pretty hard to deny
this is not all of them with direct similarities to pokemon btw.
there is a streamer that i follow (but am not subscribed to) because of a different game who has been playing it. nintendo is placing ads on his palworld streams for the SV DLC.
Interesting about the ads. Conspiracy time. Nintendo allowed the company to make non E rated content as to not tarnish the brand while being able to market to a less reached mature audience.
over under on it being taken down from steam? I dont think itll last a week
i suspect this game will be like other competitors to established ideas… there will be a big surge in users (already up to 2mil sold), but after a few weeks, people will either finish the game or get bored of it and the numbers will drop so much that people forget the game exists. great for nintendo if so.
i just hope that they announce another legends game soon because this palworld is closest to legends arceus out of the franchise, and if pokemon does announce something like PLA, i think they’ll attract a lot of these people (if they aren’t already pokemon fans)
the biggest difference between this and any pokemon game is that it is available on PC. there are a ton of people who would play pokemon games if they were available (legitimately) on PC and not just nintendo console exclusives.
i think typhlosion is correct. I’m guessing they have been working on a legal argument, but couldn’t find one strong enough to pursue, so are using this as a marketing opportunity.
I don’t think Nintendo would dare let Pokemon be off-console?
I long for the day there is a MMORPG but chances are 0%.
Also, surprise, AI is just theft and shit.
Having said that, it’s telling that the only one where it looks better is the Tangrowth. What a shit design Tangrowth is.
Nothing looks original, everything screams AI trained on Pokemon models.
Does Nintendo choose specific streams to run ads on or do they just buy ads with the platform for certain categories and types of content?
Copyright disputes are not always simple and straightforward in the United States. I don’t know about Japan, but just because some of the creatures look similar- even strikingly so- does not mean that Nintendo or TPCI would have or pursue a case.
You are right, publishers buy ads with the platforms and target with categories
Nintendo lawyers have entered the chat
The first one looks more like Magenium with Venusaur’s leaves and the second is more like Primarina where its nose is shifted towards its tail…
But I agree almost all of them are just cheap copies of existing Pokémon.
Greetz,
Quuador
It was just a matter of time before an AI recreation of Pokemon came out. And I don’t think this will be the last one. Where there is cheap money to be made (think Only Up recreations), people will sprint toward it.
I bought one month of game pass to try this out and I am enjoying it so far. I’ve only been able to put in like 4 hours into it or so and I’ve spent that entire time gathering resources and building up my base. I think today after work I’ll be able to actually start collecting pals and progressing the nearly non existent storyline. I honestly expect to probably play this for maybe a week and a half so that’s why I went with the $10 rental option.
Looks like a Pokémon/Fortnite mash up. What could go wrong?
…but it almost makes it seem like there is a market for a Pokémon game that doesn’t look two console generations old and filled with bugs.
If you can get past the fact this game borrows from many others, it’s actually really fun.
Was playing it yesterday and it incorporates a lot of the best mechanics I liked from other games.
The game does blatantly borrow from Pokémon designs, yes, but it doesn’t outright steal the exact designs. Nintendo/TPC doesn’t own generic “cute round sheep” or “electric mouse” copyrights, nor does any company because that would be too legally powerful and limit creative ability. That said, I don’t think most of the Pals are creative. But many of the Pals are also not comparable to Pokémon as some claim.
The game itself provides a gameplay experience a significant portion of the Pokémon community has been asking for from Gamefreak for quite some time. Looking past the designs of Pals, the only similarity to Pokémon is the fact that you can capture the monsters with a ball. There’s no turn-based combat, there’s hostile human characters and the game functions primarily as a survival mmo with shooter elements. Now I’m not saying people believe Pokémon needs to become a shooter, but a lot of people were hoping Legends Arceus was going to be an intricate survival/mmo game. It wasn’t, and was still fun, but Palworld delivers in that regard. In fact, being able to play together with my friends in real-time combat while also capturing monsters is the biggest draw to this game for me. On top of that it just straight up looks better than any 3D game produced by Gamefreak.
From what I’ve seen online, a lot of Palworld critiques are coming from hardcore Pokemon fans who have been conditioned by Gamefreak and TPC to accept the bare minimum from video games. It’s almost as if they are offended that Palworld challenges the Pokémon status quo and proves that there is a market for this kind of game. I’m not speaking to anyone here directly at all, just speaking in general about what I’ve seen from people trying to “dunk” on the game online. The game really exposes how far behind Gamefreak is from modern video game development. If Pokemon fans can overlook Gamefreak’s severe graphical and technical ineptitude while consuming the same repackaged experience year after year, I think they should also be able to overlook the many blatantly borrowed and admittedly uninteresting Pal designs in an otherwise entirely different experience gameplay-wise.
As far as lawsuits go, I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo/TPC do end up filing, but I don’t expect them to actually win. The game borrows design ideas and even color schemes and body part shapes from Pokémon, but no idea is original and TPC does not own Meganium’s eye shape, for example. A lawsuit in this regard is more customary than anything, because if TPC doesn’t try to defend its rights to the Pokemon designs themselves (which they do own), then it becomes harder to legally defend them in the future, even if they lose the lawsuit.
