Let’s face it, cert number debates are never going away, and it’s fun to share PSA 9s with a chunk missing, an off center Black Label, or a CGC pristine with more surface scratching than my Honda.
Feel free to post any cards here you feel are overgraded by PSA, CGC, or BGS.
There are two cards in my master set that I would like to condition upgrade someday. Every once and a while, I’ll pull cards from my display cabinet and look at them in the dark with a flashlight just to observe the condition to remind myself that I am probably too tough of a pregrader.
One of the two cards makes me wince whenever I look at it. I know XY QA is rough, and I’ve purchased several “pack fresh” cards in similar condition.
I have wondered from time to time (if there were more talented people out there than me) that can replace cards from a slab? That would certainly explain some of the over-rated gradings.
More seriously, switching a card out out a slab and resealing it likely accounts for nearly zero of the examples you see of an overgraded card.
Grading is not a perfect science, and the criteria that grading companies have established have some grey area. Sometimes someone is going quickly on a Friday afternoon and overlook something, and QA isn’t always as meticulous as we may think. Grades are manually entered, and sometimes it’s just a mistake. Pokemon wasn’t always worth the $ it is today, and at times may not have been looked at as closely as a football card, for example.
Lots of possibilites, but card swapping is a negligible % of overgraded cards out there.
The PSA 10 Tropical Mega Battle Lucky Stadium that sold a few months ago on Heritage comes to mind. I understand 10s aren’t inherently perfect cards, but that 10 had quite a bit of whitening:
