My CGC Europe Submission Experience

That’s a beauty of a card!

Yes, vintage I feel was at least 0.5 grade less than what I expected. I actually got a lot of 8s where I expected 9s. The cards were amazingly clean. Maybe a tiny scratch and a single corner with a tiny speck. I expected more gem 10s on my vintage part, was even hoping for a Pristine. And I checked lots of examples of vintage pristines from CGC.

Ah well, guess I will also stick to sending in modern cards. At least that will be easier to send out multiple copies of the same card and keep the high grade.

Still sore from that vintage Eevee promo. That could have been a gem mint, potentially pristine. It is so clean.

Grats on the pristines! Not sure if you have tried selling any of the slabs on Cardmarket / local group / card shows. But would love to know how others are viewing the slabs and are you getting the value that you wanted?

Would you be sending future slabs to them? I’m not sure if I should wait for BGS to start taking shipments, or for PSA to open or go yolo with CGC

In my experience pristine 10s are selling for a bit more than PSA 10.

I’ve sold quite a lot recently of one piece pristine 10s

That’s really positive to hear. How are the mint 10s (not gold label) and 9.5s doing for you?

Plan is to sell the graded cards under 200 euro on Vinted. For the more expensive slabs, I am going to try my hand at selling on Catawiki. I’ve tried Ebay selling before, and it worked ok. But I did not like that there is no integrated shipping label option, so each sale was a very very manual shipping label purchase process. I also heard good things about seller experience on Catawiki. It seems more skewed for sellers than buyers. It also looks like they offer smart shipping labels.

I haven’t uploaded everything on Vinted yet that I want to sell, but I’ve already sold 2 of the cards in CGC regular 10 within 24 hours of uploading. I’m adding a couple of cards per day.

Looks like the regular CGC 10s sell fine (modern). I was also worried on that.

But it seems like a perfect option for those that:

  • want a nice minty graded card
  • don’t like PSA labels or really like the way CGC slabs look and feel
  • don’t want to pay extra for a Pristine

I think I’ve done ok pre-grading. Modern had a gem mint rate of 87%. If I pick good cards that have offer good value even in CGC 10, then I have a good chance of getting a decent ROI. It does take time to find grade-able cards. But it’s a fun way to engage in the hobby, and I get to see lots of different kinds of cards up close.

I think BGS graded cards will also do fine, but I’m not a fan of the way they put an extra sleeve on cards in their slab.

Good to hear that you’re having success. Funnily enough this morning I also thought about Catawiki. I checked the seller fees and it is quite high, even compared to eBay. I don’t flip cards and mostly buy what goes in my collection. But in the future, if I have the need to sell something, I will definitely try catawiki, at least for some €100-200 cards and see how they fare.

Yeah, I started with just buying already graded for the collection. But that got expensive quickly. I really needed a way to offset the cost of this hobby.

I find that I quite like selling. I enjoy offering a nice customer experience, with good photos and all the info needed.

My partner is also happier now that there’s some kind of ROI aside from the joy of collecting. So wins all around!

Personally haven’t really tried selling much so I wouldn’t have any data points but I do see CGC 10s going for basically PSA 9 prices. Depends on the card, this mostly applies to modern. Vintage is different.

Thank you for the added insight. I suppose as a buyer CGC 10s are really good value

Totally makes sense. On another note, we also have PSA opening up in Munich anytime soon. Hopefully June? Let’s see what the turnaround time looks like. But one thing I hate is the uncharges. If you’re not a seller, those costs are brutal.

I am not a fan of upcharges. They are a grading company, and expected sale price of a graded card should not be on their radar. And I do not believe in the idea that it’s for shipping insurance.

Upcharges are 100% a scam.

Just sent in 26 cards, all modern this time.

Let’s see how cooked I’m gonna get.

Interested to see how they grade these Naruto Mythos cards as they basically all have print lines on the back (99% of their hit cards have them).

The itachi and Gaara are trophy/1st place winner cards, with the itachi being from the pre release (supposedly only 500 made). They would be the first ones are CGC.

Also sent in a load of Pokemon, mainly Japanese ARs and some Legendary Heartbeat.

Been at CGC Munich for 2 days, no revived email yet.

Naruto, how nostalgic! I loved that as a kid. I had no idea Naruto had cards.

Good luck!

Also a small selling update: A couple more of the modern CGC 10s have sold. Prices are between PSA9 and PSA10. In all cases there was a profit from the raw card and grading fee. Keep in mind that some cards were bought more than a year ago, so raw prices have moved a bit. Looking at current raw prices, there still seems to be an upside in all cards in CGC10. But the amount of upside heavily depends on the specific card.
I also sold a CGC9 for a little more than raw value. It was still a loss, but I was ok with that.

Vintage seems to move a lot slower, but that might also be because of the specific card types and the grades (mostly 8s).
