Just a quick question that I hope you can assist me with. Lately I’ve sold a heap of cards from my psa sets as I felt I wasn’t attached to them. Now I’m solely collecting dragonite psa 10s. However I still feel like I’ve hit a massive wall. Just not finding going on eBay and purchasing them enjoyable. Maybe I need to buy some boxes and open them ? Just lacking a bit of interest atm and don’t want that to happen
I’ve been through that a couple times in my collecting career Jake. Especially when I downsize. I simply focus on a new goal. Works for me every time. Now I just sell every so often and try not to disturb the flow.
Burn out can be pretty intense, it’s good not to try to force interest though.
As mentioned before, taking a step back for a while can be good, if you’re specifically interested in collecting Dragonite then that’s good, having one species to focus on takes a lot of the stress off of collecting a bit of everything, I personally focus on Japanese Pikachus & have sold off most of my English ones and that was a real weight off my shoulders, especially financially.
Engaging with people & trading is good too, auction sites get a bit tedious over time, if you have the luxury of local cards shops too (which I don’t sadly), then thats a nice thing too.
Switch to collecting rolexes. Like dragonites, they’re very pretty, and the value goes up as different bands and dials are discontinued. Plus, you can wear them. Enjoy!
Yeah all the time. That’s why you see submariners, daytonas, gmt’s spike in value. Collectors and casuals freak out when a certain movement or bracelet/band are discontinued because not only does it mean they can’t just buy one at some distant time in the future when they are “more prepared”, but the price is going to go up the longer they wait.
If you’re losing interest, then let it happen. Slow down or take a break and you’ll come back when you’re ready. There will naturally be phases where you’re more or less active in the market.
Take a few weeks break from collecting Pokémon cards. Take this break to reflect upon what you’re collecting and why you’re collecting.
The ‘why’ is very important as it shows yourself how you want to move forward as a collector. Why are you collecting Pokemon cards? Is it nostalgia? Is it to make money? Is it because you’re just telling yourself you should collect due to some personal reason?
Finding the reason why you collect will make everything much, much clearer.
If youre anything like me, taking a break = I feel like I’m missing out on potential deals or bargains to be found haha. I took one break and the whole time I couldn’t stop thinking I was missing out on some potential awesome deal or a rare card I would never see again. If that’s the case maybe take a break from buying but never looking. But If you find that killer deal on your buying break, break your break and buy the card! But id guess you enjoy more then just dragonite? Start buying some other less favorite (but still loved) pokemon’s cards in psa reverse holos! They’re a cool variant of nornal cards i think. There’s my 2 cents! Happy collecting!
Is there anything else that you’re interested in collecting on the side that’s not Pokemon card related? I have felt the burnout in different veins of this TCG and sometimes it takes switching from collecting PSA graded cards to collecting raw Japanese cards, or maybe adding a couple new cards to the multiple binders I have in progress. Yet sometimes that doesn’t always work, and I switch out to adding to my other collections which include Digimon cards, Resident Evil figures, Pokemon plushes, or my very recently started sealed game collection. I love Pokemon to death, but I know I can’t always keep chugging full force, and I think it’s a great way to take a step back so I’m feeling a little more fresh when I find my next BIN or auction.
I think what’s important to note here is that Pokémon collecting is not just about buying and selling. I personally only buy 1 thing every other month or so. It’s the people and the environment in which Pokémon brings us to together that is a vital part of the hobby to me. To figure out your motivation, I recommend going back to the beginning. What brought you to where you are now in this hobby and in your life? If you can answer that question, you will find your answer about what to do next. Hope this helps you on your journey.
