Mathonsunday’s Vintage Sugimori Collection (TCG and Non-TCG)

This initial post will set the stage for this collection.

This collection is focused on vintage Sugimori artwork in card form. I started this collection because non TCG opened my eyes to the fact that the stock art backgrounds on TCG cards got in the way of me properly enjoying Sugimori art. Now I’m Sugimori obsessed!

Current set focus:

  • 1997 TOMY Scratch Card Series 1
  • 1997 Sealdass Sticker Set

Collection goals:

  • PSA 9/10 TOMY and Sealdass Bulbasaurs
  • NM/LP of my favorite cards in my set focus. Set completion is not a goal. For TOMY all cards must be unscratched but could be LP otherwise.
  • Sealed product for my focused sets.
  • Binder comparing TCG and non TCG cards that demonstrate clear visual differences despite using same stock art with a focus on coloring and cropping/resizing.

Side quests within theme:

  • PSA 10 poker cards for my favorite Pokemon and artworks
  • Pokemon Kids, especially if I find a cheap opened collection file to store a collection in
  • 1996 Carddass - need to get some in hand to determine their place in the project

Not in scope:

  • 1997 Carddass - these cards are fun but aren’t classic Sugimori stock art and current evidence points to Sugimori doing none of them. This thread is the source of truth on E4 for developments on this topic.
  • Any Topsun - so far I haven’t enjoyed the ones I got in hand and I’m not pushing it. Might upgrade in future!

Each follow up post will cover a group of items I currently have. I’ll also be linking to the valuable guides and collection posts that helped me in my journey.

For peace of mind I try to maximize the number of graded cards I keep in my vault. Therefore I cannot provide in person glamour shots for all slabs!

Time to wax poetic about 1997 Sealdass….

As a collector I don’t chase the cards I had as a kid. Instead, I chase the cards I would have never seen. If you told me 1997 Sealdass was just a dream I’d believe you. They are extremely strange yet familiar. I love the tactile feeling of them being stickers sheets while also looking quite like regular cards. I love the transliterated Japanese names. The fun little details like moonstones and poke flutes. I enjoy imagining kids playing with them and putting the stickers everywhere. I love researching which artworks have appeared in the TCG and which haven’t.

Most of the cards I pick up are going in my 151 Pokedex binder. If the set was cheaper I’d probably collect it but hard to justify when prices of the more expensive ones are not that far off from iconic TCG promos that use the same art.
